New wire harness side by side with the old one.      But damn, $ 2,000 for a few wires ?!   Ugh .

So the parts are finally in, after a loooooong wait to get them from Europe .   The wire harness , and the leaking variocam solenoid ( a friggin’ 4” or so item which cost $ 850 ! ) will be installed tomorrow and then the car will be tested over the next two days.

I red over the time, your story. But it seems that I missed the question about a solenoid for the variocam. I had one for you...... the other parts I have are my insurancemoney. The spare motronic and camshafts. Just in case.

I only found out about the solenoid very late in the process, so lost opportunity but the timing was lousy ..    $ 7,000 invoice .  Ouch .  I paid $ 10,000 for a complete engine rebuild ( new pistons , new valves, new block, new rods , etc, etc. ) for my other 968 which blew up ) total parts and labor , so $ 7,000 seems steep by comparison ..  then again that was more than a decade  ago ..

Drove it home, the car runs like new . It’s just not just that the symptoms have vanished, but it’s much smoother all around, and consistently so..

This is the second largest single expense I have ever had with a car .   The largest one was the complete engine rebuilt of my 968 tiptronic which blew up .   That was $ 10,000 for new pistons, new valves, new rods, a new block .. and all of that .    The third largest expense was this 968 when the timing belt broke .   That was about $ 5,000 IIRC .

I’m so attached to this car, it’s hard to articulate the rationale ..because it’s not rational or logical at any level .  As things will continue to break down ( given its age, it’s bound to happen ) I don’t know how much money I would spend to keep it running but it’s a lot ..maybe two or e en three times its market value .   Like I said, no logic .   Just an emotion that keeps me glued to it.

That's cool. I have my emotional ties too, but the car isn't one of them.

If someone offered me something fair today, I would sell it off.

Then I would put the cash into restoring my flatnose volvo I haven't' touched because of the 968

or I would buy an old us street rod or something I could work on and get parts from amazon or autozone...
