Thunderbolt Raceway
#1

I just finished the first day of Schattenbaum's DE event at the newly opened Thunderbolt raceway. I was lucky to have Pete Fitzpatrick of RS BARN fame as my instructor. Thanks again Pete! It is a nice track and very convenient for all the NY, NJ, PA, DE guys.

It is a very easy track on the car's engine, tranny and brakes. Mostly driven in fourth gear with fifth coming on down the front straight. Third is used for one corner. It seems to me, as a novice, that this track is all about momentum into and out of the turns. Very technical methinks. The proper racing line for our cars is very important to get a good run on the straights. Pete was able to figure out what my faults were and got me back to being competitive with the rest of the cars in my run group. I am still amazed at how much a small adjustment to the braking point and corner entry affects the 968's behavior and balance. Our cars really do need to be driven with both its weaknesses and strengths in mind.

I think both the Lightning and Thunderbolt tracks are fun. I think i lean to the Lightning as it does require a bit more shifting and braking which is more involving to me.

Happy driving!

I'm doing a Chin Motorsports DE event at NJ Motorsports in two weeks. One day on each track. My son will also be there. Anyone else?

Jim,

I am scheduled to attend PCA event on the 17-18-19th.

I could possibly come down and help you find the line at Chin event.

Hi Jim, I'll be heading down there today with my friend Rick. He will be sharing my car with me, it's his 1st time he will have a blast.

See you there

The Chin Motorsports event at NJ Motorsports is now "in the record book". Monday was on Lightning, Tuesday was on Thunderbolt. Very different tracks, I can't say that either of us (my son and I did the event in our respective cars) had a favorite, there were enjoyable and less enjoyable parts of each circuit. Overall, a very good time.

The result is that we've decided to do a VIR event in December. And, we decided that the only way to go so far (we're in northern New Jersey) is to trailer the cars, thereby being able to spend the considerable travel time together. A 2003 Ford F350 SuperDuty TurboDiesel dually with crew cab is being picked up on Saturday - so we now have a suitable tow vehicle. The search is on for a closed trailer that will handle about 29' of cars - can anyone suggest what the minimum interior length should be?

Also - what are the best tie-down points for the 968? I'm concerned about using any suspension points, so I've been thinking about the wheels. This is an area in which neither of us have any experience - so guidance and suggestions are invited. My son will be asking similar questions on the Maserati boards.

In advance - thanks.

Jim,

I go through the wheels with my car. It doesn't bind up the suspension and keeps the car stable.

I do the same for the front wheels and in the rear I hook the strap around that thick rod thing? that you see just in front of the rear wheel.

Yes you correct I don't know much about the suspension on our cars <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
