thought on 944's

I know this is really a great 968 site. But many people here also have 944's. Due to many similarities, anyone consider a very small little corner for some 944 stuff? I mean really small so that it does not compete with the 968 portion........maybe only members who have both cars or something to keep it very limited. Yes, i know there are 944 sites.



or is this a bad idea?

many sites lump the 44,51,24 and 68s together. I noticed many of the boards aren't as civil of this one. Id hate to have to compete at being the immature one.



That said its not so much a bad idea. But what topic started here on a 44 would get better answers then elsewhere?

So much is the same between 68 and 44. Having owned both I can say that

I find much of the content here is applicable to both. Now owning only a 968, I really like that

almost all of the chat is 968. That works for me. But I can buy into a slot for folks who own both.



I will add some kudos to Clark's Garage, which along with the Haynes manual got me through a

number of DIY projects on the 44. It's one of those sites where you feel like you should have

to pay.

You can still find a descent sub-30,000 mile, no accident, no paintwork, no smoke 968.

That said, pristine 944s are in VERY short supply.



A few comments have been made here on our board that a 944 "driver" can be had for $5,000. If that's true, these $5k "specials" are truly "entry level" Porsches. Up to now, 968 Forums members seem to be "passionate" well informed enthusiasts (e.g., versus entry level wanna-bees).



I'm all for a "944 Corner," as long as it doesn't introduce a "negative element" to the site's demeaner.



BTW, even when I was a kid, 944s could be had at a fantastically low "entry" price. However, 944s, then and now, can quickly "zap" a savings acount bone-dry getting it up to par. Conversely, I've found the 968 quality to be on par with 911s. You can spend some bucks, but nothing like a 944!!!!



That said, I was very lucky to find an uber-pristine 1990 944S2 with the torquey 16-valve/3-liter engine. As some of you may have noticed, I am completely "smitten" with the car (to the point that I'm selling my 1993 968 Coupe!!!).

My thought is that this is the 968Forum...addition of the 944 would dilute our concentration on this great model.

I would personally prefer to see this site remain a 968-specialist site. I come here specifically for 968 information -- and when I need more general 944/51/68 info, I lurk elsewhere.

i certainly understand the concept, however, i vote a big no on 944



here comes the snob in me again - having seen the other boards, and watched the levels of exchanges there, and participated on some of them, i'm not really interested in dozens of threads about cheapskates looking for clutch cylinder rebuild kits, nor am i interested in the kinds of bickering that all too frequently seems to go hand in hand with many of the owners of those cars - there has been entirely too much of that in our own history, and i am enjoying that it is no longer an issue



this is a car that is superior in so many ways to the 944, and while having its roots there, is an entirely different animal - lol - i rather enjoy the fact that it is just enough more expensive than the 944s that it helps weed out the riff raff - if we let the 944 guys in, i think we'll have to start a cover charge - roflmao



most of the 944s are pretty beat up, and tend to be very old, tired, and run down - it's just not the neighborhood i am trying to build - i don't go to swap meets either, because i don't have any interest in rusted out 914 parts - it's just a whole different world - there are plenty of sites already servicing that community, and i don't think we need to get into that



don't get me wrong, the 944 is a great starter car, and can be a great platform for a budget race car, but after all, it is the older less developed ancestor of our car (nose pointing straight up now)



the bottom line is that i don't want to dilute the site, attract that crowd, or deal with having to police them - i'd rather let the 944 guys aspire to have a 968

Well said...I enjoy owning both, but mainly so I can pamper the 968 and still be able to drive a Porsche badged machine. Mine didn't cost a lot and luckily, I don't have to spend a lot to maintain it, but when stuff breaks, I do fix it properly. I think many 944 owners tend to "cheap out" on repairs and are always looking for a work around since fixing it right can get expensive which defeats the purpose of getting a low priced car. Many times, repair costs can easily exceed the value of the entire car. Bottom line, no matter how much you may like them, they aren't worth squat unless they're low mile concours cars. Really too bad, but then again look at our cars! Flash is right...it's a different owner and a different crowd...not bashing, so I hope no other 944 owners are offended. There are plenty of exceptions out there and it's nice to see anyone taking an interest in learning about the car they drive and attempting to maintain it in the manner in which it's supposed to be. There are indeed plenty of ressources for 944 stuff, so I sure don't mind keeping this site free of that as well.

yup



i do understand and appreciate the desire to have a forum for that model that is as enjoyable as this one has been for ours, but the problem is really that many of the personalities and economics dictate the weather in that forum



i am not bashing the 944, or the owner - it's just a reality though of low priced cars - you tend to get very young owners, and ones who can barely afford the gas for the car - as an example, i see a lot of people asking questions about octane requirements, hoping they can run cheaper gas - while i too was there when i was young, i was also not as welcome at my local MG owner's club meetings either, as i was when i could afford the new top when mine showed age (as opposed to the duct tape over the gash) - the old guard did not like the new kid coming in and rinki-dinking around with their classic car - lol - now the shoe is on the other foot



i actually like the 944, and really like the front end of the S2, and while there are certainly a lot of great and clean 944s out there, and some great owners too, sifting through the flack to get to them is difficult, and i think we are better served by keeping this site specific to our model



exclusivity is why many of us bought this car to begin with - having something different was attractive to us - i'd like to keep it that way - mixing in with 944s would only blur what makes our model stand out

I should mention that my "main" girl friend "detests" the 944S2 (thinks it's "cheap" and "un-safe")



However, I also date her older sister who loves the car.



That said, all the girls I date and meet out-and-about, luv the Himberot Red Metallic hue of my 968!

My 968 is my very first Porsche. I was not really sure what I was getting into and still kind of don't. Owning a Porsche has been a life long dream for me and I am pleased to have one that you don't see all over the road. 944s are a dime a dozen and just don't seem to symbolize a Porsche to me. I could have gotten a 944 a long time ago but just did not "feel" it. I did not even know about the 968 and thought I would have to get a 911, but did not want a real old one. I started looking heavy for a 911 and discovered the 968. I was hooked just from researching it and seeing the pictures. Now that I have mine (which got a clean bill of health today), I realize how "special" the 968 is. I wanted to join this group because it is just for 968 owners and I felt this is where I would learn the ropes about caring for and restoring my 968. I don't think I would have been as interested if this was a general Porsche forum. My opinion is not worth much, being a newbie and all, but I don't want this forum to be about any other cars; just my beloved 968.
