The Porsche perfection enigma
#1

I can't tell you how many people I have spoken to ( including my mechanic who has worked on every kind of Porsche for more than 30 years , a race car driver who builds, and rebuilds and rebuilds again every piece of his Porsche before and after each race, and multiple other individuals from every walk of life ranging from mechanical engineers who ostensibly have significant credibility in this domain to others with little more than just anecdotal knowledge ) who are all absolutely convinced it is impossible to 1) improve any single component that Porsche has put in their cars and 2) no major part will ever fail in a Porsche before 250k + miles unless you neglect the car, abuse it, or modify it from stock. So if a cat plugs up before 250k miles, or your rods fail before 250K miles, or a head gasket deteriorates or your water pump fails you before the life of the car, YOU are the one who MUST HAVE DONE SOMETHING WRONG to prompt that ! Porsche is absolutely perfect in every respect, and you are surely to blame for doing something or another to screw up things

So Bob, and everyone else out there that design aftermarket parts to improve this car, please STOP all efforts immediately because you're only wasting time and money messing up what was perfection

I guess I must have screwed something up because my heater control valve didn't last for 250,000 miles!

There's probably some validity to this in terms of major mechanical components ( certainly not the nickel and dime rubber or plastic stuff ) My clutch hose went at about 80k miles, the pinion bearing whine started even earlier at around 50 k , n the starter shorted at 75 k miles, but that's about the extent of it ..) Sure, IF you drive at no more than 3,000 rpm, if you do not run a chip in the car, if you never do fun runs or track it, perhaps you can get a million miles out of the cat, or the rods, or the water pump, or the variocam, but then why the heck bother ? Might as well drive a Honda.. those parts will last even longer
