this is in no way any form of guarantee of coverage.  insurance laws vary from state to state.  what a company will and will not do varies from company to company, and year to year:

 

many insurance companies will cover you, as long as it is not a timed or in any way competitive event.  you can't even have the event logged for the purposes of classification of run group.  that being said, even AAA has told me that, here in california, they will cover you for a DE, as it is a "driver education" event.  however, as soon as they find out you are timing your laps, you're done.

The result I had hoped wouldn't occur did when Lockton insurance judged my car totaled. I had a feeling this would be the case but as an optimist in the back of my mind well. So now the task of deciding what the next vehicle will be starts. Should I buy an already prepped race car, should I buy a rollar and swap most of the parts from my car to it or should I consider buying a spec boxster which is not quite spec?

Interestingly enough this initial stage is not quite as much fun as I thought it might be. Perhaps it is because I haven't settled on an option yet. Stay tuned for further news. There may very well be some nifty go fast goodies coming on the market soon.

i would be looking at a spec 944.  you will have similar feel, but be able to go and actually race competitively, unlike with a 968.  some of your stuff will swap over too.

 

beyond that, i think i would be looking at a spec miata, or jump right into a small formula car.

Interesting choices, Miata's bore me in the spec classes. Pratt Cole had a blazing fast E- production one years ago that he raced out of Salt Lake City. That was a great car to watch race, and it ran and ran and ran. Open wheel racing is a very different game, but you can't beat the handling and the performance. All in all, the 944 may be a good and familiar choice.

I have looked at them but they are even older than the 968 and generally slower. The shame is my 968 was pretty fast, had good pull and great balance with all the mods. Unfortunately I hadn't reached the stage where I drove the car as fast as it could be driven but I was progressing. How do I know this? I had a very good driver and long time racer take me out in my car. He told me that because it wasn't his car he wouldn't be driving it as fast as it could go. He then proceeded to show me how much faster my car was than I was driving it. I was dumbfounded. It served as an ongoing visual reference to me as I progressed.

Miata's have great handling but have always been cars I've passed. So perhaps too slow. Although they are well supported and tons have been produced meaning parts are readily available. The search continues and I suspect more vehicles will come on the market soon. Hopefully before winter up here in the mountains!

I am looking for a roller to use as a platform to build a new track car. Specifically I am looking for a 968 that has not been in an accident, doesn't have a bent frame and is not suffering from body damage. It doesn't need to have an engine or transmission. It would be preferable if it was located somewhere on the east coast. Yea I know I'm sure asking a lot but if anyone knows of one or can offer any leads I would appreciate it. i would be thinking not in terms of what car to get, but what car you can race, and that it's time to move on from DE stuff and start racing.  a 944 would be a lot more affordable, and easier to support.  it would also be more competitive in spec class.  it would really be about you the driver, and not the car.

I got into a 944 spec 2(I believe) today as well as a spec boxster. I'm going to drive the boxster to see what it's like at the next event. Not sure I want to invest the time or $ into club racing. Finding time for the races can also be a problem. I certainly have given it thought though. You not the only one who has suggested this!
