The 1996 Porsche 968 cabriolet.....What could have been!!
#1

They had their dream...the 1996 model "The Roadster"....and they even made one...new improved rear, new rims..and new 993 style headlights.....but it never happened!!

Would have been , could have been , should have been ....wasn't . Sigh. Even though I don't really mind the pop-up lights , as most other members here I would have preferred the fixed ones ( but only if they were "factory-made" as an integral part of the body style ...I would never consider a conversion ) . Nice prototype . Again, SIGH....

Is there no cover on the stowed top?

Typical corporate decision making, but they claim it was getting too expensive to make. Maybe so, but some 20 odd years later its still a beautiful car and hasn't aged a bit except for the headlights!

what i like about it is that they smoothed out the hard lines and edges.  i never liked those, nor the reverse curve on the rear quarters.

Looks like the cover for the top is in the "down position" you see it as a blue shield that will raise from vertical to horizontal position and completely hide the soft top.

.....And I agree, to this date it's a timeless design possibly the prettiest Porsche design ever. There is not a day without getting compliments and comments when Miss Amethyst is on the road.

I know the pop-up headlights get no love around here, but I like 'em. Always have since I owned an Opel GT 35 years ago. And those weren't even electrically operated - strictly mechanical and took a little muscle to operate. And I have a soft spot for the "bug eye" look, having owned an Austin Healy Sprite and currently a TR-3.

I also like the lights, but I was not so fond of them a few weeks ago when only one went up. Fortunately, a quick cleaning of the contact points on the tandem relay solved the problem.

I recall someone on here referred to the lights as "whimsical", which I think is pretty accurate.
