Tell me about this door panel please
#1

It is from a 92. Is the tufted panel because it has a full leather interior, or were all 92s like that. Is the sagging by the door normal? Thanks

Clearly the sagging door is not right - might not be unusual for a car this age, but not right. You'll have to ask your Coupe brethren about the tufting - nothing like that on my cab.

Tom,

I'd check the option codes re: "full leather". My '92 cab has tufted sections above the arm rest and an extra single layer leather piece covering on the armrest iteself. I think this was the stock leather interior package...ask Jeff about "full leather"!

As for the sagging, I'm guessing you're referring to the alignment of the top section to the air vent? If so, yes, that's not right, but it's hard to tell how/why from the picture.

Here's a shot of my leather door during my speaker upgrade/install.

under the window, the piece that runs across, where the lock button pops up through. that looks like the vinyl is sagging from its backing.

the seller just told me the codes are "Three codes after CO2 (cat) are radio, auto speed control and sunroof (331, 454, 650). Still no limited slip."

i thought there would be a code for the ten speakers or the leather.

That's a standard, early 968 interior. No full leather or premium sound/10 speaker from what I can tell.

Yes, there should be a code for the 10 speaker hi-fi option...490 and 454 IIRC.

so the round piece by the mirror is not a tweeter? it was square on my S2 that had the 10 speaker.

The round thing should be a tweeter..it is on my car, but it was changed out to an aftermarket unit. I have the grey interior and my door tops were discolored so I had just the tops re-done and they look great. It cost me around $100 per panel to have them done.

Here's a photo link to a full leather door pull:

92-93 has the fancier door pulls but not leather.

Hi Fi speaker option is code 490

OK, now i am confused. Was partial leather standard in 92? Ive read about script seats in a 968 so i assumed partial leather was an option (that came on 99.9% of the cars).

The seller gave me the option codes and they were if i remember correctly cat, cruise, and one other option. but the door panel looks like it has a tweeter, and the piece under the armrest looks like the 10 speaker. did porsche get rid of the 4x6 speakers and put the base speakers below the door?

Tom-

The 10 speaker option (M490) has the following configuration for a coupe:

Each door- three (3) speakers: tweeter above the window switches, midrange (?) below the window switches above the map pocket (close to the hinge, with round grill cover), and second midrange (?) below the armrest behind the funky rectangular grill cover.

Under each rear quarter window- coaxial (I believe)- midrange/woofer, with tweeter mounted next to or on top (can't remember for sure).

So, five (5) speakers per side for a total of ten (10).

Check out the attached picture of my door.

Pretty sure partial leather was the standard trim configuration for all years of the 968. Cloth script for the seats was an option in the US IIRC. And, as in some situations, leather everywhere was an option as well (see Jeff's mint green cab). This would have included the door panels in leather more than likely. In some pictures, you will see a "cover" on the arm rest. This, IIRC, was an early model (92-93) feature that was removed in late model versions (94-95). If this is case, it was probably deleted due to cost / streamlining / etc.

Hope this helps.

and the answer to the question about the doors, is yes, the 4x6 from the 944 is no longer used in the doors in american 968s (not sure about the club sport) - the base model came with a woofer in the grill area down low, and a tweeter in the round grill up top

however, in cabs, the base models used a 4x6 in the rear

and yes, partial leather was standard - the parts that were leather in that package were the seating surfaces (but not the surrounds and backs), the shifter boot, and the steering wheel - the rest was vinyl

and yes, the late 94 was the point where they deleted the armrest cover on the standard package

Bob,

I disagree. Partial leather was an option ($668 in 92/93, $682 in 94/95). Almost every 968 had partial leather but it was still an option. Standard were the cloth (inserts). Standard leather parts were the shifter, boot, and steering wheel rim as you mentioned.

As for the full leather car ($4190 in 1992 on a cab), you got seats fully wrapped in leather, door handle pulls only on the door, full lower dash including glove box, console sides and lid, and the e-brake handle is fully covered in leather with stitching in matching color.

As I mentioned before, there were 95 different interiors offered (material/color) on the north american 968s during its 4 year run!!! No wonder they weren't making money.

thanks. I have to ask the seller a few more questions. he has covers on the seats. gotta make sure there is leather under the covers.

Now i see the differences between the standard, and 10 speaker system. The car went from a standard four speaker system in the S2 to a standard six speaker system in the 968 (tweeter, round one where pocket was, and rear). So the tweeter I see is a tweeter.

The window sticker of my S2 reads

Partial leather front-black N/C

radio 'reno' N/C

Partial leather seats front $615.00

I guess it was the same with the 968. partial leather was a 'standard option'.

I havent checked my option sticker but i think it is cruise control, sunroof and leather.

this one is semantics

i don't think the partial leather, while listed as an "option" was anything but standard - i think you actually had to order a deletion of the leather to get cloth - this is one of those "options" that all of the cars came with, and you had to pay for whether you liked it or not - in my book, if you had to do something special to get rid of a feature that is in all of the cars, then it is standard

the stereo would be another good example - they all came with something, even though it was an "option"

Well, we'll have to agree to disagree.

All 968s came with exterior paint applied. If you ordered black, which was a STANDARD paint color, it is listed with a price of N/C (no charge). If you got the OPTIONAL midnight blue metallic it was listed with a cost of $803 (in 92).

You mention the stereo, am/fm cassette was standard (code 331) and is listed on every sticker of a car equipped with one and a price of N/C.

Partial leather IS listed as well but this one has a price attached to it. To me, that makes it an option since a cloth interior car would say N/C.

The partial leather was a cheap way for Porsche to offer the dealers a way of saying the car had leather seats for only $668 added to the sticker total. That is why almost every 968 has partial leather but that doesn't change the fact that it is an option. Options have a price attached to them. Standard features have a price of N/C. IMHO.

This is the reply i got from the seller when i asked about the codes.

Three codes after CO2 (cat) are radio, auto speed control and sunroof (331, 454, 650).

I guess it is a bare bones 968 since all those options are standard as is the partial leather they charged $6XX for.

It is optioned the same as my S2.

Jeff, if you want i will PM you the vin so you can add the car to your registry.

Sure, Great. Now, you just need to join the Porsche club (www.pca.org)

Just to confirm, here is a photo of the dealer sales book which shows cloth as the Standard bucket seat interior (s) and partial leather as Optional (o).

Join PCA are you kidding. If I do that again i will have two copies of panorama in the recycle bin. i had a big thing with Vu when i moved from NY to CO. I wanted to join both regions and he told me i would have to join PCA twice and get two copies of Pano. i found out i could join RMR without going through PCA so i did that.

a few months later i stopped getting copies of NYs newsletter. turns out someone at HQ decided to switch regions for me. Of course it stopped when my 951 (with new owner) was on the cover, and my name was mentioned in the autox column.

still havent gotten it straightened out and my buddy is the autox chairman and i am pissed i cant read his column which has references to our shenanigans.

I guess you detected I am just thrilled with PCA. i think they owe me a free six months since i havent gotten what i paid for the last six months.

Im on my third S2, had a 89 NA, and a 88 951 with a lot of little mods.
