0-60 in the Tip vs. the Manual
#21

it doesn't take much to vary by a half second, especially in a 6 spd - a little bit of tire spin, or too early a clutch dump, and you've done it

i want to be clear that i was not slagging the tip - my personal choices and opinions are not relevent - my comments are not related to how fun the car is, or anything like that, and reather purely limited to 0-60 times

the tip makes this car very practical, and many people thoroughly enjoy it

Some of us even drive them competitively and do quite well. Barring a disaster, I'm headed to first place in the state in a class filled with 3.2 Carreras, later 928s, 951s, 944S2s, 964s, euro spec SCs, and Boxsters. Fortunately, we're not drag racing...once it gets going, the tip gets you around the track decently well.

A little non-scientific analysis....We have a road not far from here nicknamed "The Tail of the Dragon" (318 curves in 11 miles is the tag line). I have run the Dragon many times over the years in both tip and stick 968 cabs. Not being a professional driver, I have to say that using the tip in "stick" mode seemed quicker, possibly because of no shift lag. Either way, it is a blast. Unfortunately, it has become commercialized and the traffic up there is tenfold what it was 7-8 years ago, making full blown speed runs a thing of the past.

i was hoping chris would pop in on this one - he's certainly had a lot of experience pushing his to the edge

on the right course, with the right driver, it can be great - the new tip in the 997 is actually faster shifting than the manual

of course, there is the fun factor involved, and i don't think i will ever be happy with any kind of tip, primarily because of downshift limitations, and desires for higher rev shifting - i really want to downshift to just under 5k, and you can't in a tip - 4700 is the programmed limit

i imagine though that racing a tip sure makes you smooth - no room for error - probably pretty decent in an autocross too - long legged 2nd gear, and not a bad 3rd

it's a good thing for me too that my better half doesn't want an automatic of any sort either - we'd have a bang zoom $170k 2 seat mercedes if they offered a stick

The Panorama Oct 91 article (the 2nd one) is very thorough, and talks in detail about the Tip.

I personally love my tip , there are a few things I would change though..

1. The red line is to low (about 200 before the gauge redline) when driving spiritedly the darn thing auto shifts about a second before me (I'd wait about 300 after redline) causing it to go from 2nd to 4th (how embarrassing )

2. Down shifting quickly (as Flash touched on) is imposable, you can up shift as fast as you can push the lever but down shifting is delayed, when I drove a standard trans (for MANY years) I had the habit of going from say 4th straight to 2nd (bypassing 3rd) when coming to a tight corner; this is not possible with a tip (have to wait a sec or so before pulling the lever to the next lower gear, very annoying)

3. and last is the starting in 2nd thing EVERYONE hates

beyond these things I think it's a great trans IMO

I can vouch for Ender's statement, and I've got the speeding ticket to prove it!

I can't speak for 3rd, but I was clocked by radar doing 68 in a 45 zone in 2nd.

I can't remember with exactitude but I want to say between 119 and low 120s topping 3rd. Per speedo, factory sized 16" tires/wheels. Please, don't quote me on it though...
