Okay Bob, Dan, Chris, 4Banger, others, not sure where to post this, but I've just heard on the radio someone pinching my idea of collective music, so rather than wait until next week I thought I'd float this and see where it takes us.

 

A week or so back I was cruising the fora for music.  It was dominated by stereo questions and/or exhaust tuning, fair enough, but I was after musicians.  Eventually I found one theme with you three in it (though I recall Dan didn't actually admit to playing anything, only knowing a musician) anyway there was a fair amount of talk but no action.  So I thought I'd change that ......

 

So next week I shall try to record some fairly ordinary alto sax playing [won't be hard to find ] , I thought I'd try "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got no swing" .... I'm choosing that melody because it has several breaks, so not only can various instruments be laid over each other, but also the breaks permit other instruments to take over.  Now I have no mixing equipment so I'm hoping at least one forum member has, so if we post various individual efforts....  I'm absolutely no great shakes on the sax as I took 40 years off in order to work, but I do like playing and singing (hate karaoke unless completely munted) and this might be fun.

 

So shall we do this here in the Covid survival theme, or move it over to Musicians where it might go a little more unnoticed?  Is this a musical safe-space

Since having both of my hands operated on in 2018, I have not been able to play my instruments. I do have some loss of dexterity and strength in both hands. According to the surgeon, regaining full strength and dexterity may not be possible, we'll see. 

 

I am currently working on some models and I find the dexterity issue to be frustrating. The thought of having to give up instrument playing or model building is actually more terrifying than it may sound.

Chris don't worry, I was a high level sportsman until I was 49 yrs old, two hip replacements later and I can hardly trot; so we do what we can do. Any musical input from you will be welcome, as will any other comment. We're all mates eh!

There's multiple thread options here, my wife loves to take photos and mélange them. But I think the balance here is on Covid, so welcome to my dining room this evening ....


   


A neighbor bought around a bottle of desert wine at about 6pm, check out the label! A little difficult to see .... " Cuvée les voisins confinés"


The tomatoes are locally grown, not pretty but VERY tasty.


The eggs and orange cake was breakfast because today is Orthodox Easter.


This photo combines a lot of the things we've been discussing in terms of local products, neighbourliness, quality etc etc.

That photo just triggered my Pavlovs dog syndrome ! As for the Easter theme feast.. my mother was orthodox , my father was catholic, and Im atheist , so the good news is that I get to make colored eggs , lamb , and cake, along with all the accompanying drinks, three times a year ( usually ..), the third one being Festivus Easter . ;-) ;-)


As for musical inputs, during one of our annual California 968 adventure events ( but also one where a few 968 friends from other states and countries joined - PA, SC, and Canada ) a couple of talented members brought their instruments, and one improvised an instrument ( drums ) but man, did we have a wonderful time gathering on the hotels patio with after dinner drinks and cigars ..and music. Not to mention Chriss flying days stories, which were totally captivating, but I digress .. That was a memorable evening for sure !!


There are a variety of Covid music compilation videos on the internet , ranging from Broadway stars singing in unison all from their homes ( very well produced video ) to Italian tenors compilation, to rock musicians remaking hits like Stain Alive , Bohemian Rhapsody and various others with Covid related lyrics, all very entertaining , but any 968-ers musical inputs would definitely be a welcome thing here ..

Boy oh boy Dan am I tempted but I shall refrain. Robo my wife is an incredible cook and even better baker and holy crow it’s like the holidays everyday. Getting worried about the waist as who could possibly say no. It’s winter here and local farmers markets haven’t started,  Don’t believe they could anyway but we are eating lots of pretty vegetables. I would love to listen to whatever compilations ensue.

I suspect "we" do ...... so can you mix on your electronic?  Because I'm just going to launch a sax track and hope you and the others can take it from there.  If it works then I can do some more (I'm generally into blues/Louis Armstrong etc) but am happy to improvise/back up a different genre if someone wants to lay down somethings else. Actually I'm not sure how I would do that, but I'm sure there must be an app that I can download.  The quality probably won't be up to much, but that might work in my favour  

 

Give me a day or so to make a recording ......

Scary alright ...there are far too many confounding influences ...... age, race, nutrition, "underlying conditions", testing processes. Nowhere near enough is known about Covid19 to confirm causality. Too many "experts" .... not enough hard evidence. Yep this is scary because even the real experts are guessing.


Last week Alexandra and I cut out patterns for 150 masks (someone else does the sewing). The aim is 1500 by May 11th,, that's two for each of the village. I don't particularly believe these masks are a serious help, but in an effort to make some sort of difference (psychological) in this time of crisis .....

These are for you, COVID-19 builds 1 and 2.

 

The first is a British Royal Navy Grumman Hellcat fighter assigned to # 808 Squadron aboard the HMS Khedive. This aircraft participated in fleet operations off of Malaya and Sumatra in May 1945.

 

 

 
The second is a USAAC Republic P-47 C Thunderbolt. This particular aircraft was flown by Col. Hubert Zempke who was the Commanding Officer of the 56th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force. The 56th was the first
USAAC fighter group bomber escort and fighter sweep missions over occupied Europe in early 1943. The 56th became one of the 8th Air Force's most celebrated fighter groups. The Cyrillic script on the nose of the aircraft translates to My Comrade.

Wonderful! Well done Chris, I'm glad you got them done, thank you very much for sharing the models and their history. My father flew Wellingtons during WWII so as a child I was very interested in planes and made a few models myself, but nothing to the size and standard of finish that you have achieved. Love the camouflage on the hellcat - thank you again.


On a more banal note, has anyone else rediscovered M*A*S*H? We seem to be restricted to watching just the last couple of series, which unfortunately means Radar O'Reilly doesn't feature. But that was/is very funny viewing!


Finally my ankle, which I seriously twisted a few weeks back, is nearly 100%, so I look forward to being able to getting some jobs done and posting on the "what did you do for your 968" next week.

P.S. I'm disappointed we've not been able to compile some music together, it could be fun (it could be awful ). I've recorded some sax in a number of formats but cannot post it. Has anyone managed to post .wav or .mp3 anywhere?

Today I added a few patches / emblems to my face mask .    


   

 

Old, beat up patches from tshirts and other stuff in the garage which were designated for trash, but I removed  them and gave them a new life  as defenders on my coronavirus shield !
