Using "lockdown" as an excuse to spend all day in your pyjamas, binge watching box-sets and drinking beer is, apparently, not a good long term plan (why is life so obtuse?) so let's post what we achieve during lockdown as group motivation. I have always been a bit of a germaphobe, so not touching people or strange objects is not new to me.

 

Meanwhile, I have a ton of house projects that need my attention, so I won't have any trouble staying busy.

I am having to go to work as usual, however much of my work is "event based" and all that has been cancelled or postponed till???? so I am just kind of bummed. Just found out this morning that the Kentucky Derby (nomally the first Sat. of May) has been moved to September if at all and that is like 400 million in our economy locally that is in jeopardy. 

 

Oh well, today is St Paddy's day so I will stop on the way home and pick up some Smithwicks or Guinness and call it a day.

As it happens, I belong to an organization called ETE (European Railroad Enthusiasts, and I have large collection of European HO scale trains. Some of my time will be devoted to upgrading the older locomotives in the collection to full digital operation with sound chips installed.

 

I also build 1/48 scale model aircraft, WWII, Korea and Vietnam Era aircraft.

 

But my most important project at the moment is to build a 1/700 scale model of the ship my Father served aboard during WWII. The ship was the USS Dixie, AD-14. The model will be finished in Measure 32 camouflaged as she appeared in 1944. My goal is to have this model completed for my Dad's 100th birthday. He sadly passed at an early age and I though this might be a nice way to remember him. An interesting side note, my Mom was an Army Nurse stationed in the Philippines. The My Mom chose to go aboard the Dixie, because she knew that the larger ships had an ice cream machine at that desert would be an ice cream Sunday.

 

And there will be lots of time spent fly fishing. A really good way to social distance and there are some pretty good fishing locations close to where I live.

With all the million and one Coronavirus memes making their rounds on the internet, I saw one which made me think not only about my grandfathers, my father and my uncles ( one of my grandfathers was a career military man - made it all the way to General ) but also about our friend Chris V. Im going to paraphrase the meme which was clearly directed at the current carefree ( Im being kind not calling them irresponsible) adolescent generation .. .

- Your grandfathers were called upon to fight in wars . Youre called upon to wash your hands and sit on the couch for a few weeks . Dont f**k this up ! -

Nice one Dan. I'm presently banged up because the cafe society of Paris didn't take official directives seriously. So now the streets are empty of all but essential movement. Having said that, for much of the rural communities it is work as usual, the vines won't cut themselves. But other than that, no cafe/bar, and when going to fetch groceries then no loitering for a chat, and no driving unless one has filled in the government form. However, as I said, the jobs at home are getting done .... my wife has already painted one bedroom (green and gold!!!!) and I'm bottling/kegging last season's wine....hope for the best, plan for the worst!

Chris ... some photos would be VERY interesting.

This is a life defining event in the history of our country. Some will make good choices and prosper while others make poor choices and suffer. Opportunities that we can’t envision now will present themselves later to be taken advantage of. Our health care system with all of its failings will display its inherent strengths. Telehealth once unlocked will explode and provide economies of scale that are hard to envision now but that will increase access and quality of care. This should also allow for positive and disruptive change in our delivery of care. Smart docs will move to telehealth and be able initially to demand higher compensation. 

Change will occur regardless of what we think or want. Take the time to enjoy and reorient with what’s is important and lose that which is not. We have been given an opportunity, regardless of its downsides, to be taken advantage of.

Agreeing with Bob. Telehealth is long overdue and should have been widely practiced without the need for this crisis to take place, but yes it has now gotten the kick start it required. And yes, this will change many aspects of our lives , our habits, and the way businesses function, for not just the foreseeable future but possibly permanently . Opportunities indeed.

Prisons, especially rural ones, have been practicing telehealth for years. It's tough to get doctors out to some of these places, and with good help on site and the proper technology, a doctor can see many more patients in this manner. It was necessary for the prisons, and now it has become necessary for the rest of us.

There's some great little clips from Spain where dog walking is permitted and so a) people are renting out dogs [the dogs are complaining they've been for 20 walks a day, b) people are taking toy dogs out on a lead, c) kids with dog outfits are taken out on a lead!

Our tp factories allegedly were running 24/7 before the crisis without much room to increase production. Once we reach a tipping point we should have supplies of tp back to normal. As more people stay at home less panic buying should ensue as the herd/lemming mentality won’t be as present in stores. Saw a tp calculator on something I read yesterday. It persuaded me to go out and buy another 6 month supply. Eventually there will be a glut and supplies will back up. Will prices drop? Can you believe with the price of gas dropping we probably won’t be driving our cars to take advantage of this! 

Dan I always knew you were an elitist snob that’s why we get along so well!
