SuperMax +35bhp Vortex Generator

<!--quoteo(post=81374:date=Oct 7 2009, 05:50 PM:name=flash)-->QUOTE (flash @ Oct 7 2009, 05:50 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}><!--quotec-->i fully expected to see an improvement at between 2k and 3k

things i'd like to see are how it responds to cold starts, and what it is like over 5k - this is where we might see problems with such a device<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Well Flash, this is where I again have seen an improvement, as before My car was a bit temperamental to start and the idle has been rather erratic for a while, I had traced it down to a 'gunked' up idle stabilizer valve, but have yet to get around to getting it off the car to strip down and flush through the unit with cleaner, the cost of these units 'new' is ridiculous, in the UK, so I have been living with the lumpy idle, as the car is running very sweetly apart from that. But again, with the vortex unit in the pipe just before the maf, I'm getting a smoother idle, and no starting problems , hot or cold. I've yet to give the car a 'thrashing' on the run to work, as the weather here is lousy at present, and there are still far too many tourists making their way back north up the M5 motorway here in the South West of the UK, so I may have to go and have a run around my local race track with the regional Porsche club track event to get the full story, but Im still amazed so far....

interesting - i wonder what the A/F readings look like - the device would theoretically increase the air portion and lean things out - this should make it harder to start when it's cold - this might not be the case though if it "blocks" air until it reaches a certain velocity, which would then make it run a tad rich down below that point

but this is the nature of the design limitation - anything that is fixed like that will have specific characteristics that affect efficiencies differently at different points - that which lets a lot of air pass it at one point, would tend to restrict it at another

fun finding out either way - maybe i'll order one and find out exactly what it does

Well I thought.... that if there was something going on positive, you could come up with something that is at least measurable, and 'mod-able' , after all, look how effective a few holes in the airbox can do!!

This is fascinating.. I would usually dismiss any of these devices as complete nonsense, but could this be the first of its kind that actually may do something positive ( minimal as it may be ) and for under a couple of dollars on top of it all ?

If it does not hurt anything to try out, add one more to your order Bob.. consider this an official $ 2.00 IOU

http://www.power-maxx.com/ is the website for the unit, although they seem to be charging £29.95 for the 'bit of metal' I would stick to eBay guys!, less than a dollar fifty on there!

Please tell me more about this. Where is this valve?

Is it number 17?

Yes that's the item, the pipes tend to get a little sticky and carbonized, which causes the irratic idle , just take the tubes off and run four fingers inside, oiley, black, deposits which don't help smooth idleing!, more of a problem ironically if an 'oiled' type air filter is used (k&n)

only if it is oiled incorrectly - unfortunately this happens too often - people tend to think "if some oil is good, more oil is better" - that's not the case - also, people tend to oil both sides of the filter, rather than just the front side, which leads to this issue

wow - i don't think i'd do that - since it's in the intake system, i'd stick to something like MAF cleaner or something like that (maybe carb cleaner, but i'd have to check to see that it didn't have any fragile parts like the MAF does, and that the carb cleaner couldn't get to any such parts)
