Superchips 41127

So a fellow 968 recently bought a ProMax chip for his own car, and then he found out he already had some sort of Superchips chip in it.

He gave it to me to test it, though I'm unsure if I should put it in my car, as it has 294k kilometers on it.(Though there's no oil leaks or anything)





Anyways, I found aft after searching that Superchips seems to have different types of chips, but I didn't find anything on one with the 41127 number on it.

I've seen mixed reviews, some people have reported the rev limiter kicks in at 6100RPM.



Anyone have any idea how this chip is? Last owner of it didn't have any issues with it.

And will it do any harm to my old engine?

Sounds like it might be a serial number for your chip, that is "tied" to the car. http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=644894

Well, I finally got answers from a guy named Dave Tinsley at Superchips about what we found when we opened my ECU to install the Promax chip I bought.



When the ECU on my car (1993 Porsche 968 cabriolet) was opened last week, we were surprised to find one of your chips fitted (on a daughter board) rather than the standard chip. It has the following on the top : Superchips 968 7258 070 39253 Can you please send me information about this chip - is it still a valid chip upgrade for a Porsche 968 or is it now out of date, what does it do that the standard ECU chip does not? Thank you for your enquiry



The Superchip that is fitted into you ECU is mapped to give the car extra power and torque with improved throttle response.



The new map is calibrated for an engine running in standard form but would be compatible for slight engine modifications such as air filter upgrades and or a free flow exhaust back section.

The superchip is matched to the original Porsche Chip, we had to produce the Superchip based on each individual Porsche original chip in this case the Porsche chip with the identification number ending 7258



This was in the ECU with the identification number 0261 *** 070



As these are not a reprogrammable chip then this file should match the current file that we have for vehicle.



This chip was supplied in January 2000 but we don’t have a name for the customer who purchased it.



The superchip will only work in conjunction with the protection board.

Chip prices are, like car prices, all over the place - from the Sevenoaks mob on eBay for £45 via Promax to the price quoted on the Superchips website of £249 fitted! It's not a difficult job to fit - pull the carpet back off the velcro in the passenger footwell, unscrew the 4 screws on the plywood panel and remove it, undo the couple of bolts on the bracket securing the ECU in the footwell, the Promax instructions say disconnect the neg terminal of the battery before unplugging the ECU, but I'm pretty sure this was not done on mine as I did not have to reset the radio when I got the car back! Bend back the tabs so you can open the ECU and remove the PCB, carefully lever the old chip out and plug the new one in, reverse the above to get it all back together. I'm told 20-30 mins should suffice!



As I said, this was fitted to my August 92 build completion (although July 93 registered!) 968 cab - I thought she went well compared to my coupe when I bought her, now I know why, it's not just the extra "feel" of the sports seats!



Please note the comments above about the original chip number and the ECU number - as I don't know what's in your car! However, as I was not asked for that type of info before I bought the Promax, I'd suspect that the ECU and chip are standard to most 968's.



So - yours for £35ono including 1st class recorded delivery.

as i have said before, based on the maps i've seen, the superchip adds about half of what the leading chip does. if i had to guess, the early chip used the generic piggy back setup until they figured out how to break into the code and put it on a regular chip. the one i saw was later than 2000, and was just a chip, like everybody else.

I have the PROMAX chip and it has not given me any trouble. It does raise the rev limiter and I found it gives a nice kick in the pants feeling.

the promax isn't bad, as long as you don't mess with the intake or the exhaust. it gets a bit lean if you open up the exhaust, and add more air at the intake. it's not horrible, but if it were a really hot day, and you were beating the snot out of it, and you run 91 octane, you could trigger the knock sensors. i was able to force it to happen.



that's actually one of the problems with a lot of the chips out there. they were tuned to 92 or 93 octane. we can't get that here in california, and some other areas have the same problem. it's going to be a bigger problem soon too, as we are just about to see a shift in supply to lower octane maximums. i think it's upcoming in 2016, where the normal pump will max out at 91 nationwide.

lol - and my opinion on chips is that are great with guacamole and salsa
