Refurbishing Leather Gear Shift
#1

The leather bellows around my gear stick is looking older than it should and so I want to refurbish / replace it. "Alan Gun Leather Accessories" seem to offer replacement gear sticks with leather fitted for all model Porsches at reasonable prices.

Is this a good source ?

Is there a better choice?

AGLA has good customer service but the color match of Burgandy to Chestnut Brown was nasty so I sent it back. Probably would have matched up well in a burgandy interior but I was thinking it was close to chestnut. Man was I wrong.

I used AGLA to recover my old '86 944 steering wheel and was very happy with the results. This was about 10 years ago, so assuming things haven't changed too much, I would recommend them.

Initially, I thought I would do it myself. Then I received the package of cut leather and thread. After playing with it for about half an hour, it was clear that I wasn't going to be happy with my own results. I called and they provided a loaner steering wheel and I promply shipped them my steering wheel along with the leather kit. A few weeks later it was all done.

While I can't comment on the shift boot, I can say that I was pleased with the job they did on my steering wheel. And, the service was friendly. Hopefully, things haven't changed too much in ten years!

Jager Engineering also has leather shift boots. You might want to try them.

AGLA had replaced my 89' linen ivory steering wheel about 2 yrs ago, pretty happy with the results. But may be it was a special color, even with a loaner wheel, it took over 10 weeks.

My feeling is may be the next time I will just ordered their parts ( provided they are standard color) and find some car interior shops locally for the change out.

My Marine Blue shift boot for a 92 was spot on for color matching. The leather appears to be good quality and close to the original. I had no problems with the company and have heard other good things about their customer service. Hope that helps!

Very happy with my black shift boot replacement. My attempt to do this on my own using their boot an my original knob exposed my ineptness for all to see. Their tempatation to say, "I told you so" must have been great.

But thankfully, AGLA has great customer service and they sent me a newly recovered stock knob, which they provided. I pryed out my old cap, stuck it in the new lever, installed the whole setup and mailed back the old core knob in the pre-paid envelope they also provided

They operated on the honor system and it worked out nicely for both of us. I'd highly recommend them - both the product and customer service. If it isn't right for you, they'll fix it.

Best,

Buzz

Hi Buzz -

Is that the original metal knob (held in with the clip) you're talking about or the rubberized plastic one?

I'm now feeling quite confident AGLA are a trustworthy mob to deal with.

Thanks all for the feedback.

It's the original metal knob/lever held in with a square-cornered, metal C clip, but I believe it has a heavy rubber sheathing around it to dampen vibration inherent in the setup.

According to AGLA, the 968 knob/lever is the same as the 944/951. I could not tell the difference between my original and the re-leathered 944 part sent by AGLA. They will feel identical in your hand.

The best part is that it doesn't rattle, buzz, vibrate, or hum like most of the 993/996/Boxster upgrades. While I understand there are ways to minimize that on the upgrades, my preference was to not have to deal with it. The weight of the metal and dampening of the rubber minimizes all that and is much more comfortable in my hand over long drives.

Best,

Buzz

p.s. - saw your car yesterday at Frank's. Sorry we didn't meet, as I picked mine up during lunch hour. Hope you got yours back with all the 'while you are in there' completed

Heh, I actually did what you did... I sent them my old metal knob and they're going to recover it for me. Exactly what I wanted. Thanks!

New Shift Boot Leather from AGLA installation complete...

Was waiting to finish the radio head unit install so the new boot didn't get messed up. Here are before and after pics. I ended up with a very slight twist in the rear seem but I guess I can accept 99% Overall, the entire process only took an hour or so and the most tedious part is working the boot far enough up over the actual knob to get enough material to wrap around the head. They (AGLA) recommend contact cement and the old boot appeared to have some glue residue, but I opted not to glue only due to the fact the new gear pattern inlay (993/996 style) was a very tight fit and smoothed things out very nicely.
