Striped Bolt
#1

Dang it!

I hate doing that.

I striped a bolt on my dad's 964 during an oil change.

I must have torqued the bolt on too much last time so when I tried to remove the bolt today the wrench is just slipping.

I called my mech. and he said I needed to "drive" the wrench on.

What the heck is he talking about?

he is saying that you need to drive(with a hammer ) a socet or wrench on to the bolt head so that it has GRIP. Dangerous action this is and an lead to worse problems.

sometimes, you can file the head so that flat sides are made. OR, get one of the locking sized stripped bolt removers.

Oh, crap.

Well its not completly striped yet.

I was smart enougth to notice the signs that it was wearing down.

We are ording a new bolt and I am going to try again with a 6 star socket instead of the 12 star I was using. (I hate those, they always strip)

If that doesn't work then I'll have to buy one of those kits you showed me from Sears.

Thanks for the help. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

i use 6 point w/ 6 point head. as a general rule, use the tool that best fits, and place all your 12 points somewhere where you can't get to them...

You might want to use anti-seize on the bolts that are removed often so you don't have the problem again.

Harbor Freight also sells the bolt extractor sockets sets in metric and standard. They may not be the highest quality but I have used them successfully twice now without the socket stripping before the bolt head.

Darn right.

I was able to successfully get the bolt off with the 6 point socket.

I had my bro kick while I pulled and we broke the bolt free.

I then dunked the new bolt in oil so that it's a little easier the next time.
