The Proper Way to Get (your car) High
#21

I put a 4 post lift in and love it. Granted you can't work on brakes or wheels but that is not an insurmountable obstacle. Once the lift is up and locked you're safe. I do however pay careful attention to the lift as it goes up and down. Chocks are a must. Pits probably get dirty and difficult to clean over time and if you mop your floors I suspect a drain would be needed. If you build a garage you can't make it too big and shouldn't use poles to hold the ceiling up. Look at other peoples garage, see what you like and dislike. Better yet ask the owner what they would do differently. Even though my garage is larger than my house, I didn't build it large enough. I would love to be able to drive my trailer in and be able to take the car off as needed. Can't. Of course I didn't have that need or even know I would when I built the garage but never the less it is still too small.

Pits normally do have drains.  I wouldn't put one in without one.

To work on the wheels of your car with a 4 post lift, they make a bridge jack - - but, they're a little expensive $1,100 to $1,300...and you'd have the same problems already discussed about jacking points.

Say what ?! I think I'll build a shrine in your honor ! That's a real man's " castle " ; when the garage is the showcase of the entire property !

My dream garage has one simple feature : two turntables ! Or at least one turntable, for the daily driver .

I also built it when the market was down and it seemed like a better investment than equities. The fun and satisfaction has more than overcome this boneheaded statement and thought. Although the value will never exceed what the market would have gained I did end up with an ADA accessible home with the connecting breezeway!

I have this: http://www.maxjaxusa.com

It is GREAT! Not too expensive either for a 2-post lift. It takes up to 6000 lbs.

Here is another option, jack stands that go on the hubs.  They are a bit pricey, but look stable and easy to use.
