Stereo Headunits
#21

I would suggest a quick mail to the guy in Norway to confirm,

But I would think it's a wiring issue that's why they say it does not fit

The single din is a standard size, ISO

The only other thing is if it's massively longer than a normal stereo headunit.

As for the adaptor, I made my own from din connectors bought on eBay, as my car had been completely butchered in the wiring department, all the plugs chopped off and screw blocks everywhere,

Yeah, so I e-mailed Bergvill, and he (I think the owner, Tore Bergvill) replied immediately. It's the right harness for CR-1 units with the M490 hi-fi option, and it's made for the Continental (VDO) retro head units. It will fit, ECS Tuning prob says it's not compatible bc of wiring, I'm nearly certain that's the case.  My CR-1 deck still works and I will keep it for originality sake, but it's not functioning properly with balance/fade/volume controls. The CD changer gets power, but the laser is no longer reading CDs (Alpine, not surprised, and it is old).

I'm excited to put a retro BT unit in there with the amber lighting. Hopefully it brings the stereo back to life.  I'm genuinely impressed with their site, so I'll do a little word-of-mouth advertising here. https://www.bergvillfx.com/index.php/

All said and done, the new stereo will cost about $265. Not too bad, and it keeps it as original as possible. I may end up purchasing a new Porsche genuine amp, can't believe they're still available.

I love the Porsche Classic radio, but I just don't know if I can justify over $1k for a head unit.

IMHO, and I hate to say it, Alpine head units/equipment have been nothing other than complete garbage for me. My Alpine deck in my 968 coupe is junk, the Alpine deck that was in my Jeep was junk. That said, and since my coupe is not the original equipment, I've decided to go with a Pioneer BT/CD unit in that one like I did for my Jeep. I'm so impressed with Pioneer head units off the shelf for aftermarket applications. No amp in my Jeep, and that Pioneer just bumps. It's great.

Funny! Though not a bad place to stash your phone while driving.

On the topic of head units, I'm surprised the manufacturers don't make replacement look-alikes as they already have the face molds. We can't be the only group who would like to maintain original looks but upgrade/modernize performance. For example that cassette flap could easily have a usb slot sitting behind it, and the internal mechanisms are now devoid of driving belts and other moving parts; much simpler internal design.

I'd love one of these BLAUPUNKT:  Car Radio unfortunately too much money for me, but they certainly look the part.

Seems like a nice option.

I would love to revert my 968 back to stock but original CR-1s are now reaching $1000 !
