Stereo Headunits
#1

Now I like my gadgets as much as the next bloke, but when it comes to the 968 I want a stereo that looks retro ish, but has modern functions but does not light up like a Walmart Christmas display

So I have been thinking about one of these

What do you think?

Hi Waylander,

That's a nice looking stereo, think it will fit nicely into the interior of a 968.

Regards,

Jack

Porsche makes one also, it looks like it belongs but is a bit pricey.

This is a Canadian web site but it is available everywhere.

I bought a first gen Porsche classic nav, it was defunct I spotted a blown capacitor in the power unit, repaired the unit

No map updates after 2011, and the updates were $200, no DAB, so I sold it on made $300 on it

That was a while ago, the new version is £1000 without the DAB antenna

But I quite like this cheaper version, found one on Amazon UK for £200 in my Xmas list now

And there is one with nav as well i've seen on the site.

Yep the Porsche radio's are very pricey, but very good looking.

Waylander, I like the looks of that unit. I have never heard of that brand over here in the USA.

Ryan, I spent hours on google and other searches and never spotted this unit, A friend with a G50 911 spotted it god knows where and sent me the link.

they certainly don't make the most of the internet for search and advertise, but I think I have to get one

the

MCR 1031 NAV is 1000 euro

Thats an outstandingly attractive head unit.

I searched all over for an appropriate HU recently. Decided against the Continental and VDO offerings; they are really a good fit in our vehicles but the functionality is weak for the asking price. I ended up choosing an Alpine HU which has really excellent BT integration. Its slightly too blingy but the display has customizable LED color so it can be adjusted to fit the amber dash lighting.

Would love to see pics of the install if you go with this one!

There has likley been no subject on this forum that has spawned as much discussion, controversy and opinionization (is this a word?) than the subject of car stereos. Have fun!! Icon_lol1

I also had a top priority of no glitzy blinkenlights. Got the Blaupunkt Brisbane, too shiny and still too many lights. and a horrible means of navigating my SD card music.

Wish there was a porsche classic unit that lacked the nav feature, for a LOT less $, but no profit margin in that I suppose.

How about Oil!

Or antifreeze or possibly tyres

the list is endless - about 968 things in total at last count - it's why we all have so much fun.  But I do like that Porsche head unit, more if it was not so expensive.

If you want to think of it as a bargain, however, check out the Porsche muffler Bluetooth stereo that was available a while back.  Here in Canada it was only >$7000.

Aesthetics are subjective, so to each his own . I for one don't like the Porsche unit at all , it looks like something from the 70s, with the only thing missing being the 8 track tape under it . But those who want to keep their car as authentic as possible and still get some modern features in their head unit , that's about as good as it's going to get . The price is ridiculous, you can buy numerous aftermarket top shelf units for materially less than that . Being so aesthetic-oriented, I have a Unit in my car without Bluetooth , which drives me nuts , but not willing to compromise the looks of what I feel fits and looks the best in favor of function .

I’ve purchased three 968’s and none of the stereo’s worked. Haven’t bought one either. I like the sound of the car. Of course the targa has a stereo with a big subwoofer in the back. I may have to break down and put a stereo in the queen. Mind you I have music everywhere else. I get honked at while I sit at lights scrolling thru 6000 songs looking for that right one.

I have an alpine unit that allows you to sound delay the speakers. It's a bit of a pain measuring the distance from the speakers to your ears, but the sound is awesome when you get it right! Infinity kappa's in doors and panels and Flash's dual subwoofer sealed enclosure sure helps. I don't mind the looks of the head unit at all and wouldn't trade it at all.

Waylander, you see my forum on VDO (through Continental) head units? I just posted it, didn't want to piggyback off this one. Check it out, I have the M490 option though, for my cabrio, so it requires a special harness, which that Norwegian company does, for free shipping no less. I would like to keep as much of the original as possible. But some say it doesn't fit, that makes no sense to me.
