now the LHD steering shaft is NLA I thought I would let you know that the joints can be replaced fairly easily

 

You will need a vice, some patience and a few other tools. 

 

I have rebuilt about 20 of these now so I am practiced at it.

 

you will also need two Bailey Morris universal joints (BM210), might not be available in the USA but I'm sure a equivalent will be.

 

these little joints are staked so with a little care and a modified cold chisel they can be re-staked again.

 

the joints cost over here about $40.

When I was having my shocks replaced the mechanic leant on the hub nut with his extension bar. This caused the front wheel to rock backwards a degree or two, not much, but I assume not ideal either. Is this likely the bushes in the control arm, or symptomatic some other wear?


I ask because I have the opportunity to get under the car next week and have a look around. So some guidance of where to look and what to look for would be helpful.

Its not so much of an issue on LHD cars, as its not close to the exhaust

Are the steering shafts the same on the 944? I was thinking of picking up a used 944 unit and rebuilding it and just swapping it out so the car would not be out of commission for as long.

No I am 99% sure they are not!  i believe that the 944 version is a mirror image of the 968 version. I had to buy one from a dismantler and it was useless when it arrived.
