Speedometer Face Replacement ???
#1

I have a 1995 968 US spec car with the speedometer in MPH on the outside ring.

I want to replace this with a Canadian version with the 300 KPH on the outside ring.

Can anyone tell me if I can just change the gauge face (that is if I can find just a speedometer face in KPH) or if I need to replace the entire speedometer unit to do this.

I have also posted on Classified:968 Parts Wanted: Canadian Speedometer Unit (944 641 951 26). Gaging from the part number, it looks like this could be from a late model 944 as well? Could someone confirm this as well?

Thanks

Don;t know for sure. I have changed out the gauge itself and it is fairly straight forward..hardest part being the release of the three connectors on the back of the cluster (two release tabs on each). It would seem that from a manufacturer standpoint, only the increments on the face would change and not the internals. Each set of mechanicals verified as accurate from the supplier.

Best guess is that you can change the face. But is is easier to just change the gauge.

Yes, you can.

Once you remove the speedo from the cluster (very simple)

You have to remove the needle, then there is 2 screws that hold the face to the body.

Be very careful when removing and installing the needle, the shaft it mounts to is very very fragile.

The hardest part is getting the needle back on, it is likely you will be out of calibration once you do this.

I think there may be some info on clarks-garage.com that gives most of the information.

You may consider sending out to a speedo shop such as Hollywood speedometer in California.

I have a spare KPH speedo 20 - 300 calibrated with a recorded distance of 92.565 KM .

It's Japanese spec but original made in Germany from my 1992 Coupe.

If it's of use Fred..... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Of course there's no guarrantee it would survive the postal system from the Uk but I could box it up with poly-chips etc.

Let me know .

Shaun;

Thanks for digging around to find your spare Speedometer. I would be interested in trying to make arrangements to see if we can get it across the pond. I have sent you a PM.
