Speedo Repair on Hold
#21

So I checked odometergears.com and for the 968 they have the 15 tooth gear wheel but they strongly advise you should also get the gear pod ( because it's either a part that's worn as well, or it will likely soon give up after the new gear goes in and you'll need to do the job again ) One major problem : they indicate there are three different gear pods for the 968 - a 12 tooth, a 16 tooth and a 17 tooth , and to make sure you know which one you need so you can order the right one. What the hell ?!! That means you first have to disassemble the dash and then just have the car left in that state of repair until you can send in the order for the gears and wait for it to arrive ?! Why would the idiots at Porsche use three different gear pods for the same model car ? Please tell me it has to be a mistake on their site and that all our cars , no matter which year , have the same pod - if so, how many teeth and what color ( they have a blue, a green and ..I forgot the other one..) . ??

I would order all three pods, they're only $ 25 each ( the gear is also $ 25 ) but hate to go trough the hassle of returning the other two...

That's the 16 teeth one. The green is 12 teeth, and the red one is 17 teeth. If the gear wheel has 15 teeth ( there is only one choice ) how in the world could it synch with three different teeth count pods ? That just eludes me.. Anyway, doe anyone else remember what color the pod was ? One more vote for blue and that's what I'm getting :-)

This comes from Pelican. It seems to rule out one of three options you mention. Feeling lucky? :-)

Well, lucky..ER, than I was in the previous post :-) , thanks. Now for those of you that can think mechanically which one of the pods ( 12 teeth or 16 teeth ) would be the logical match for a 15 tooth gear ?

For what it's worth, mine had the 15-tooth gear and the 16-tooth small pod.

Some misconception earlier in the thread. You do not have to remove the speedo face to get to the affected gears. Simply remove the four retaining screws that hold the speedo to the cluster and pull it out. On the side is the motor held with two screws. Remove them and gently pull the motor off. You now have access to the gear pod. Here's a tipronic gear pod, 16 Blue large gear, 15 tooth small

I wonder if the different gear ratio could have something to do with km/h or mp/h speedo's? Probably not but...

Of course it does ;-) The missing color is red which is for km rather than miles. No sure what the 12 teeth versions is for, I've only seen blue and red ones in my cars...

Got my 15 teeth wheel and the 16 teeth pod ( they're both white , even though the odometergears site indicates the 16 pod is blue ! ) so not sure what to make of that.. I guess I'll call them. In any event, jeeezus are those things small ! The 15 tooth wheel is almost microscopic !! Might need to hire a watchmaker to install those, it looks like you need those magnifying glasses, and really tiny, slim fingers to hold surgical precision instruments when working on that set up .

Odometergears replied to the email I sent earlier today ; the original 16 teeth pod color was blue, but they now inject both pieces in the same mold and they're all white. (. p.s. have to admire businesses which respond to you on Sundays - I think we're one of maybe a handful of countries left where you can expect that...or, not expect it but be pleasantly surprised .)
