Sobering Map Pinpoints Every Vehicle-Related Death in the US
#1

Yes, a true tragedy, each year roughly 40,000 people in the US loose their lives on the road. As I scanned the maps, it seemed there was a relatively high proportion of pedestrian and motorcycle fatalities. Please be careful!!!!!

"Every year, as more and more cars and trucks clutter US roadways, reports of vehicle-related fatalities have increasingly become a sad fixture in news stories across the nation. In truth, each death is a unique tragedy in and of itself, but when viewed on a macrocosmic level the total scale of lives lost on America's streets and highways is profoundly disturbing. Mapping site ITO Worldrecently compiled data of virtually every fatality that occurred on roads in the United States between 2001 and 2009 into one sobering map.

According to information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the map above represents the 369,629 drivers, passengers, pedestrians, or cyclists killed in vehicle-related accidents in the US in that nine-year period. The zoomable image above pinpoints the location of the accident, along with the gender and age of the victim.

What's perhaps most striking about this visualization is how there is hardly a community that hasn't been touched in some way by a death on its streets, and how vehicle-related fatalities seem to loom over the whole of the US like a plague -- a jarring reminder of how thousands of individual losses amass as one national tragedy."

Common sense would tell anyone this is what’s probably going to happen if you ride this way, but this X-ray vividly brings the point home

Great post Dan! After more than a decade in the Middle East I can tell you that kids and adults alike put their feet up like that, for the most part don't wear seat belts, kids bounce around the front seats, and frequently the driver has the seat reclined so can only just see above the dash ..... but they are generally are not interested in statistics .... if it's my time it's my time, and if it's not it's not  :glare:

Couple that with large families and large cars means fatalities frequently occur in large groups; maybe 6-10 at a time .... sad but true. Robert

Never understood the feet up position. I’d smack someone for putting their dirty feet up on my clean dash. Course that’s just me.

Funny! I hope the new year is treating you well.  You will note I have stopped crossing stuff off my "to do" list.  Now I just delete them, which is not so obvious. Cheers
