I had to top off my PS fluid this morning, so I opened up the hood (while runnging) and walked in the garage to get the ATF. I was topping off the reservior and noticed a little smoke. I looked down and the wiring that goes fom the hood latch into the body was melting the insulation on the wire. I have not gotten to trace it, but I suspect it has gotten pinched somewhere and the two sides of the wires have gotten together. There is a two pin connector there and I disconnected it. That seemed to stop the heat. I also pulled the wires as far apart as i could, so that may have helped. I'll try to get back into it this evening, but does anybody have any experience with this?
- Where does the wire that goes back into the body go?
- Also, my wipers did not work after this - maybe because they think the hood is open, they won't operate? Anbody confirm this?
Any other pointers?
Thanks!
-Bart

Man....you would think the fuse would blow before things start to melt like that. Did you check the fuse for the wipers?
Seems like the wires would be for the alarm and or the underhood light, but I don't know for sure.

Yowza! Here's a pic of the final damage.
Didn't check wiper fuse yet - didn't discover that until later.
The wires go to the hood switch, to tell if it is open or closed, but I am not sure what all it controls. I thought the underhood light was like a gravity switch.

The 30 amp wiper fuse was blown. When I replaced it, the wipers would work, but the smoke came back. The emergency hood release and these wires go into the same grommet from here. Any idea as to how to fix this? I hate to start blindly taking things apart.

I thought I made some progress this weekend, but maybe not. Anybody else got any ideas?

My buddy fixed this. Pulled out the front wiring harness that goes to the hood switch and headlights and replaced a bunch of wires. I left the hood light non-operational, but all else is working well now.

replaced a bunch of wires. [/quote]
How many would you say you replaced and what condition were they in?
I love my 968 for what it is & don't hate it for what it isn't!

He replaced them, I'll have to check. Several just out of safet. After the hood latch short, there was a significant amount of melted insulation in there.
