Slate Grey Metallic

A buddy of mine, (former body shop pro) and I were planning on painting my cab at the paint booth here on Hickam AFB. Ran into a problem, the paint shop here doesnt have the code for Slate Grey. Two questions, anyone have a good source for someone who will mix the right color? I provided the code L22D with no luck. Also, does anybody know if its a acrylic mix? What is it?

That is by no means a rare color. Porsche used it across multiple models for 14+ years.


Your paint shop didnt try very hard. Check the bottom of this link for all the cross references.

I would say just call around some other paint shops in your area. Anyone who sells Glasurit should have the mix formula. Or call a dealer and see what paint supplier they recommend.

Also - as your body guy probably knows - metallics are really hard to shoot. They tend to mottle like crazy unless your technique is spot on. Go with the highest grade paint you can find and make sure to research tip size for the brand/grade you choose before you spray.


A body guy and I diy'd my 914 in copper metallic PPG two-stage in a pro Binks booth. We did like 6 color coats - the mottling was awful. Sanded the whole thing down, bought new paint, resprayed it - still mottled. Really bad in sunlight. Im just living with it (paint is cheap but clear is $$$$!) but wish I had strayed from original and gone solid color instead of metallic. Sad

That’s interesting...when I had both of my 968s rear wings painted to match the car color , the body shop ( the place to which the local Porsche dealer outsourced their paint jobs ) informed me that I’m lucky to have a car with metallic paint because it’s really easy to match that and it’ll be indistinguishable from the car’s current or original paint ( and the result proved that , it’s perfect ) whereas the non-metallic paints are a nightmare to match and it would cost double or triple to get it just right ..

Guys, thank you very much. I figured it out. The proper code for slate grey is just "22D," which came up as a match. The code on the 968 registry was wrong, which lists "L22D". One letter matters. The Sherwin Williams shop out here can mix it and gave me a couple of quotes. I'm still trying to decide between mid and high grade. It's $700 high 2x qts vs. $520 mid 3x qts for the whole kit. Maybe I just spend the extra and get the high grade. He just sprayed a Mitsubishi Evo out here, and I'm actually very pleasantly surprised. He did a really good job with the metallic green on it. I'll be helping of course, and I think he'll be able to teach me a lot about the process. We won't touch the door wells or engine bay, it's just an outer respray. Not worried about panel matching, and I will post pics for sure. I think we're going to do it August or September.

Personally, would go for the high grade paint regardless. In that quantity, while it may be nearly 2x the price...your overall cost isn't that much more when it comes to repainting a fine machine like this.

I would definitely spend the time to take off the bumpers, remove as much trim and glass as you can. Put on new rubber seals if they've shrunk in the Hawaii sun. If you do go to sell it in the future, a well-concealed repaint will make people feel better that the job was done right and with care.

Glad you got it figured out.


Go with the high grade. You will only want to do this job once. $180 difference is nothing - nothing! - in the realm of paint.


Paint is fun but it is a tremendous amount of work. I hope it goes well!


Ds968 - Im actually quite glad to hear that about matching metallic paint. I am in the process of removing my PO-installed vinyl wrap which was at the 3y limit and it has caused my clearcoat to delaminate on the fenders. Really displeased as it was NOT supposed to do that. So I will be shopping quotes for the repair this week. And, I also have paint code L22D (code confirmed on option sticker Smile ).

What I think the shop really meant by being easier to paint / color match, is that the metallic flakes component of the paint tends to mask some small imperfections, whereas those would be more noticeable on  "flat"  paint cars,  and you have get everything absolutely perfect or it'll stand out more.
