Helping my dad with his new to him 968
#1

For my dad's 83rd birthday he received a cab (and several bottles of cab).  Going to the local PCA (Seattle area - PNW) Show and Shine I ran into a guy who had the same and directed me to this site.  Dad wants to learn about his acquistion and solve some issues: power top does not work, some electricals, and a clunk heard when accelerating and I am here to help him until he learns his way around.. I figured a forum taylored to his specific vehicle would be the most helpful rather going through Rennlist, etc.  His background:  born in Germany and has owned 3 Mercedes, 2 BMWs, and 1 Audi - and host of domestic and Asian.  He always wanted a P-car and my step-mom was good enough to fulfill his dreams.

About me:  Air cooled guy on Early S Reg, The Bird, Rennlist.  Have had 72 T, 73 S, and currently have an '82 SC and a '71 914-6 3.0 conversion.  Enjoy wrenching and doing performance upgrades.  Always admired the 944 type vehicles prowess at autocross - but do my darnedest in the 914.

Anyway, Hola to the group!

Rick

Hi Rick, and welcome

Power top could have been intentionally disabled by previous owner

Many on this forum have done that to reduce the risk of costly damage in case the top has become misaligned over the years

Check to see that the relay is in place, also the motors on each side can be mechanically disabled by turning a central bolt.

Is this a 6 speed or Tiptronic. Clunk could be dampener in a Tiptronic.

Welcome,

Thanks guys for the kind welcome.  It's great to be here with fellow enthusiasts.  To answer a couple of questions, the car is a tip but it shifts great with no issues - it's only when accelerating hard a thunk is heard under the floor board.  Where is the damper located?

What does the central bolt do in terms of deactivating?  Is it located in the center of the rear bulkhead or is there a bolt on each motor?

He loves his car and is busy getting everything perfect.

He is also interested in adding a functional roll bar for the street and a wind block screen behind the seat backs.  I heard there is a vendor here selling affordable roll bars/braces.  Any recommendations on either account without spending a fortune.  Going to Porsche is a non-starter.

Thanks again guys - will post a pic after I figure out how it is done here.

Welcome Rick! You can try the search function (always use the little cog wheel!) at the top right. You should find loads of info on the damper.

Rick,

I searched the site for "cab top manual"

Try this thread for starters

Post more questions as needed

Regarding chassis braces, try design 1 racing. The maker is a member here (flash).

How many PMUs is a fortune?

Based on your pcar background, you probably already know that 1 PMU=$1000 (Porsche monetary unit, as another forum member hilariously pointed out)

Oops I guess I don't know how to add hyperlinks to posts when using my mobile device...
