shuddering
#1

I've had a problem for a while now. While driving my car shudders violently as if my engine is about to fall out of the car.

Of course when i take it to mechanic he does not find any problems. drives perfectly. any suggestions. Ive changed timing belt. and still it shudders. any suggestions would be helpful. thanks

Can you narrow down the conditions in which you experience the shudder? Is it at idle? A particular RPM? Hard acceleration? Steady cruise? Left turn? Braking?

Anything like that would be helpful.

while iam driving. Could be inheavy dountown traffic bumper to bumper or doing 60 plus it feels as if engine is about to fall out of car. I put it in neutral and it stops.

Like nothing never happens. it is a very scary feeling.especially zooming on freway.

I had the same thing happen to me one morning when I started up the car. I called my PM and he felt that it was dirty injectors. He has a system that takes less than an hour to clean the injectors while they are in the car.

He says it should be done every 5-6,000 miles.

This may be what is going on in your car...worth a try at about $125.00 per service.

I missed my appointment and will have the work done next week.

Strange, but it did not happen a second time in over a week. I am glad of that, the car felt like it was going to shake itself apart.

Do both of your cars have manual transmissions?

My 968 felt as described just before the clutch failed. I have read old posts about in traffic shudder when the clutch gets hot.

Mine is manual and this happened with a brand new clutch kit with only about 1,000 miles on it.

if it's a manual car, i'm betting clutch problem

very possible one of a couple of things could be happening

you could be experiencing glazing - getting it hot can cause this, or, if the flywheel was not dead smooth when the clutch was done, or had hot spots, you could glaze the disk (same would go for the pressure plate if reused) - this happens a lot with people who spend too much time slipping the clutch

the 2 masses of the flywheel move somewhat independently of each other, rotating relative to each other as much as 2 inches - they are supposed to spring back to a nominal position though - if the center mass of the flywheel is not returning to its nominal position, you could get an uneven action like this - it is not uncommon

you could have a release bearing failing - this is a frequent failure with people who rest their foot on the clutch pedal, or keep the cluth engaged too long (for example, while waiting at a light)

how many miles on this clutch? how does the pedal feel?

if this is a tip car, please disregard all of the above

Taporite6,

Electrical problems can cause a tip to shudder. I believe that Chris Lennon has some experience and may be able to help you with this.

Thanks. So its either electrical, related to fuel pump or dirty injectors.try the latter first.

if it was injectors it would do it all the time, I doubt it is the injectors. It almost sounds like a torque convertor lock up solenoid going bad, does it act like a manual shift transmission in too high a gear for the road speed? and if you came to a stop would it stall the engine?? Frank

it never came to a stop. As soon as it shook put it in neutral and it stopped for this year i think it has happened maybe three or four times feels more like the engine than tranny.have new starter and solonoid.

Interesting - I encountered this twice with my tip, but under slightly different circumstances: hard acceleration, stopped immediately on reduction of throttle. I can't tell you what it was though, since shortly after I had the tip entirely rebuilt due to expensive bearing noises and worn out internals. Had a check of the bands and so forth lately?

i drove the car today - it didn't do it - after talking to him about the history of the car, and finding out there was some monkeying around with the dme relay by the previous owner, i am thinking he likely has an intermittent fuel problem, like maybe a dme relay getting ready to go, or bad connection - other than that, it could be a problem with a tip control unit, but that one is out of my area

i told him to watch the dash the next time it happens and see if the tach does anything odd - after that i told him to run some injector cleaner and swap the relay and see if that fixes it - those are simple DIY things that can easily be ruled out, before trying to diagnose the tip
