Is it still a head turner
#1

I really liked each of these back in their day. I know quite a few of you don't particularly care for Japanese cars. But with that a side. Do these cars still look good to you. The prices are ripe.

I've always liked the SC430...but it isn't available with a gearshift - automatic only. Nothing wrong with a 500SL either...not sure whether a manual was available in those or not. Of course, if auto tranny is OK, then absolutely! It's just a shame to have that much car and not be able to really "drive it".

Just my .02,

Both are nice and still head turners IMO ( mild head turning as opposed to the 968 that's a whiplash head turn ), but as far Japanese cars go I actually prefer the early Infinity G35 lines , though the latest G37 is pretty cool also, which I find to be one of the most beautiful coupe designs in ages..
As for MBZs, hard to argue with classics - we had a 1973 ( I think..) 450SL for a nearly decade and even today if you drive that car it gets looks..

I have to go with no on both counts.

The Lexus looked like crap when it was new, and time has not been nice to its design.

The Merc has aged lots in the last 5 years. Although, I would not mind having one.

I'd have to agree with Porsche - to my eyes, the Lexus always looked like something designed by a committee afraid to be bold or take any risks - so everything got rounded with the results being "blah" - IMHO. The Mercedes is a clean classic design, and I don't think there's an SL of any year that, in good condition, will not catch eyes.

Ditto on the Lexus. One of the car magazines described its styling as resembling a pumpkin seed. Not sure why, but for some reason I find it to be a fitting description. I much preferred the SC300/SC400 that preceded it.

After I sold my 944 I was looking to purchase an SL500. I was looking at an SL500 at the dealer where I purchased my 968. The SL was a flop and for the fun of it I asked to drive the 968 since I had never driven one. I ended up purchasing the 968 20 minutes later. I still want an SL, I just have to buy the wife a fun car now that I've had several in a row. Then I'll be running out to get one.

SC430- love the interior, but the styling does nothing for me. not ugly, just boring.

A friend of mine now owns the SL6, Yes, the 12 cylinder beast. Funny it only puts down 385hp. Seems a bit low for 12 cylinders. Im also not impressed with the looks of this car either. The interior is nice and I respect the engine, but the styling is dated.

For all those that do still love the car or wanted one but financially couldn't plop down $115,000 now is the time to buy. Hard to believe how cheap these go for now.

The Mercedes:
I have always liked the SL. It's stylish and I think it ages well. If Porsche made a 928 convertible it would have been competing for the same customers as the SL.

The Lexus:
I like Lexus as a new car, nice looks and good value. But The way I see it Lexus will never become a classic or age gracelfully...the designs are to trendy and lack character.

although very rare, the Benx could be had with a manual....but only the 6cyl SL320. The SL500 & SL600, and not sold in the u.s. SL73 were all auto only.
