Shifter and Steering Wheel Questions
#1

My original stock midnight blue shifter leather is very dry and worn so am considering replacing with a new stock unit. A new black or blue one is still available from Porsche for about $215 (best price).
Question is whether to go for black or midnight blue.

My original midnight blue steering wheel leather is looking worn and needs some tlc or replacement. I have a perfect black standard 1995 993 4 spoke wheel. My 993 wheel is in much better shape than my blue one so I am thinking of doing the change out.
Are there any other parts required to do the change-out ?

I would like to do a changeout that would still look factory.
For those of you with interiors with 2 colors, should the color of the steering wheel match the shift boot ?

Thanks !

i think that one is personal preference

i'm not a fan of blue interiors - they just never seem to look clean enough to me - i had one in a 325 and it made me crazy - the wheel and shifter see a LOT of contact - if you are at all concerned with cleanliness, you will be constantly dealing with that, as well as the wear that blue shows more than black

that being said, some people value matching interiors and originality, so if that is a concern, then maybe blue is better

lol - sorry i was absolutely no help there

My interior is midnight blue over light grey deviating. Top of dash and door cards is blue, my steering wheel and shift boot used to be blue. I replaced them both with Black. Steering wheel is a Black 968 CS wheel (tried to find blue, but could not). I decided to get a matching color shift boot, so i installed a black suede shiftboot with a brushed aluminum insert. I like them much better then the oem blue steering wheel & boot with black plastic insert.

When I was looking for a 968 the car's condition was more important than color so I ended up with a white exterior/blue interior car. The original 968/993 style blue seats were not in the greatest condition but happily this week I scored a set of seats from a 993 that are easily 9/10 scale so I am very happy.

I was originally leaning towards adding the black 993 4 spoke steering wheel and black shifter boot but now given how nice the blue seats look, a newer shifter in the same blue leather is looking like a better idea and since there are only 2 left in Germany, maybe its a good idea to get one now.

I realize this is a personal choice but I was hoping to hear what the factory supplied when cars had 2 color interiors. The other question was if I needed to purchase any other different parts if I am replacing my 968 4 spoke blue wheel with my 993 4 spoke black wheel.

Thanks

Fox944, where did you get a suade black shift boot? I was thinking of doing this and getting a suade steering wheel. Also, is the original shift pattern insert available from Porsche? I'm not a huge fan of the stainless one or the one with white lettering...

Steve G, I would go black and use the 993 wheel. I agree with Flash on not being a huge blue interior fan. I would also choose black because if you ever need more items, black is the easiest color to find and get...

Which is precisely why you should stick with blue. You'll have the cleanest newest original blue shift boot anywhere.

Hi,

I also have a midnight metallic blue 68 with blue full leather interior and my shift knob is also with a lot of wear.
Seats are 9/10 as yours and wheel is in great shape (like new!).

I would like also to change the shift knob and keep it blue... where did you contact Porsche? Locally or directly contacted the Germany HQ?
If i will go your route, i guess we'll get the last two blue shift knobs available...

Contact AGLA for steering wheel repairs and shift boots. My shift boot was a perfect match to my 92 Marine Blue leather. I have not used them for steering wheels, but they are popular for leather repairs. There is also 928leathershop.com that you could check with as well.

As for changing out to black, as others have said, that would be a personal preference.

Aslet, you could use the black plastic shift knob insert you have currently after you swap your boot. They just pop in and out.

I need to dig up the info on the guy who makes the Suade shift boots. I'll keep you posted.

Fox, I actually have the stainless steel insert (PO installed) in there now. Can the OEM ones still be purchased from Porsche?
