The original Porsche SUV
#1

Porsche could have saved all their R&D cost on the Cayanne if they'd just made this a standard option.

Well, we're headed on vacation to the Outer Banks next week, but my wife tells me there was no way we can take the 968, because we're packing groceries for 15 people. I was like "no problem, this can can store anything you can throw at it!", and I promptly took the back seats. She still wasn't sure, though, so I had to take it to the next level.

So from Porsche's website, I put together a list of email addresses for every Porsche parts department in the country. I already knew there weren't any left in their inventory, but I figured maybe someone had one in the back room that wasn't in the inventory. Alas, I got a couple hundred negative replies.

So, I scoured the various forums and sent emails to those who have factory racks to see if anybody wanted to sell. Sure enough, a guy from rennlist had one he'd bought at Hershey four years ago new in the box, and it had sat in his closet since.

The best part was I only had to drive an hour away to pick it up!

The mounting is pretty slick: The rear bar bolts into the four hex bolts under the rear hatch, and the forward bar clips into the drip edge. It only took me about 10 minutes to get it mounted up. I was very pleased how nicely the Thule box mounted up; no modification was required.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy about it. Vacation, here I come!

I should mention for those interested in mounting a rack that there are alternatives to a factory rack. I was looking at alternatives, because the outlook for a factory rack was pretty bleak.

I've been told that a Thule rack can be mounted to a 968 with fitkit 170, and can be mounted to a 944 with fitkit 034. These fitkits can be hard to find, however.

Another (more readily) option is a Saris rack (90" load bars are just long enough) with 010 brackets for the front and the rear. Unlike the Thule, Saris continues to produce the required brackets. Saris' accessories are more limited than Thule or Yakima, with no luggage carriers. However, I'm pretty sure the Thule box that I have would mount to a Saris rack just fine.

Yakima may also have a rack that fits, but I didn't get around to looking into their options.

QUICK PLUG: I found the Saris load bars at a local shop, they're a barely scuffed display model that I picked up for $130. They need the afore mentioned 010 brackets to be mounted. If anybody wants them for cost + shipping, say the word, otherwise I'm going to return them to the shop in the next couple days.

I've always wondered what those four hex bolts are for and now I know, thanks!
