Shift Knob Insert Replacement
#1

The shift knob insert on top of my 6 speed stick shift is badly worn. The knob itself is a root wood piece that I believe was an option when the car was ordered back in 1994. The worn insert is a real eyesore on top of a beautiful shift knob and I want to replace it. Can anyone tell me whether the insert is screwed or glued into the wooden shift knob? Any tips how to remove it without damaging the wood that surrounds it? I want to replace it with one of the aluminum inserts available on Pelican Parts. Thank you in advance for your advice.

That is a pretty rare shift knob so I don't think a lots of folks are going to have much input for you. I doubt it is screwed on, but you don't want to mess up the wood trying to pry it out. I guess I would try to put a thin metal sheet to the edge of the insert and try to get an x-acto knife blade or something similar in between to see if it will pop out. The stock inserts are just pop-in.

Good luck

Thank you very much for your advice Ryan.

I am still a Rookie so either can't or don't know how to post a photo of the gear shift. I will wait a couple of days to see if anybody else comes up with any other solutions. Once I have conjured up the courage to execute I will post the outcome.

I believe you need 5 posts before you can upload pictures, you're almost there Smile

Thank you very much Jay for that advice. It is probably not really in the spirit of the rules for this to serve as my 5th post but here it is anyway.

Flash is your plastic insert for sale? My car's badly worn 6-speed insert is plastic. As I prefer to keep my cars as close to stock and where possible take them back to stock, I will prefer to replace my stick shift insert with the same that is in there now. If you are prepared to sell me your insert, may I send you a personal message so that you can perhaps send me a photo and price of what you have? As I am very new to this forum - please let me know how to go about sending PMs.

Thank you in advance.

Today I replaced the worn and flimsy little piece of card board atop my stick shift (the leather has worn away completely) with the insert that Flash sold me. As there is only a couple of millimeters of depth on top of the rootwood shifter knob, I had to cut Flash's insert and then file it down to be as thin as possible before gluing it into place. I also repainted the graphic prior to installation. This is what it looks like now:

Thanks again Flash.

Looks beautiful!!...nice job.....I repainted the graphics myself last year....Interesting experience going over then wiping, then over again, but it looks just like yours.....not as nice though.

Thanks Kaj. I cheated a bit with the painting of the graphics. Rather than use a very thin brush, I discovered the paint pens at Michael's. They can 'write' or rather paint on pretty much any surface and was much easier to control than I imagine a thin brush would have been. Nevertheless I still had to wipe off when I 'colored outside of the lines'.
