Craftsman Damaged Bolt/Nut Remover
#1

this Craftsman bolt-out kit is indispensable.

surprisingly, I haven't had the pleasure of using it on the 968 but it did save hours of extra work when replacing the valve cover gaskets on the 993.

these M6 bolts are worse for wear when the car is driven in all seasons. while I make it a habit of ALWAYS replacing hardware of this nature, they never age well. this last bolt (lower right in the image) was in an impossible spot. no amount of rust penetrant, vise-grips, heat, or cursing in German was getting it out...and it was only torqued to 9,7Nm (7ft/lb).

why I waited to break out this kit is still beyond me — stubbornness I suppose. when I did, though, my problems were finished.

the beauty lies in the 6-fluted spiral design of the tool. you simply find the size that fits the destroyed fastener, an appropriate wrench or socket, and apply torque in the direction of removal. because of the tight spot, I had to use an 18mm box end with electrical tape wrapped over the extractor to keep it in place while I worked on it. the more torque applied, the tighter and deeper the flutes twist into the fastener's head (providing there's enough of it left). this M6 bolt I was removing, the one that wouldn't move with a pair of vise-grips, let out the classic metallic click before submitting with almost no effort.

Sears sells two versions of this kit, the one pictured (10pcs) and a low profile version for even tighter spots; naturally, I bought that kit, too. I can't recommend these enough because if I had to resort to removing that heat exchanger, a violent episode between me and that car would've ensued.

This is a good piece of information, though I thought cursing in German was the magic bullet for all Porsche repairs Smile
