second chance vs. an ( older ) M5
#1

soon after I bought the car and before any chip, air box, & exhaust mods, slight weight reduction, etc.. I made the mistake of testing the 968 against an M5 ; as you can expect, it was not a pretty picture. I think that one was a 2004. So I told myself I'd be well advised not to tango with 800 lbs gorillas and just pick on cars my own size

btw, I never engage anyone on off the line contests - almost entirely highway runs and that's what that one was also.

today, as I'm just getting on a higway on ramp behind a 2001-ish or 2002-ish M5, me in 2nd gear at about 4400rpm he decides to punch it .. so I figured what the hell, I'll be embarassed but it's all good fun, so I floor it. He stayed ahead all the way to about 130mph or may be as much as 140 ( I was not paying too much attention to the speedometer once we passed 120 ), BUT AT NO POINT DID HE PULL AWAY FROM this 968 ! . So he gave up and slowed down...eventually.

Not sure if it was one whose engine was just not running at its best, don't care if he was coming back from Home Depot with a trunk full of cement mix, and paving stones, don't care what the reason may have been, but when I returned home and parked, I kissed the front part of the sunroof ( as a proud father kisses the forehead of his child ) and gave it a pat on the rear spoiler .

I LOVE this car. Sure, it'd be great to have 350 hp in it, but if we can play in the same ballpark with cars that have 150+ more ponies than us, woooo-hooooo ! I'm happy.

nice! I myself have mixed it up with an early 90's firebird once (moded with loud exhaust, etc), and managed to keep up with him, with a passanger with me and only the airbox mod and the RSB flywheel. No chips or anything. I could have EASILY out cornered him, even my friend was saying just how much his car was leaning into the turn. Personally I think it's great how a NA 4 banger can keep up with bigger engines and bigger cars. On rennlist I read stories of people keeping pace with Diablos and what not.

I think a lot of the power the M5 has goes towards towing it's 4000lbs of luxury
