stopped by the local P-dealer this a.m. on my way to work to check out a catlog item they had in the store and in the service parking lot i spotted an amazon green 968 coupe with a service number card on it, so it was defintitely a customer car there for some work . My first thought was : - serously ?! the dealer still has mechanics that have the slightest clue about 968s, and can service those ?? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> And my second thought was : - wow, the dealer still has mechanics that have a clue about 968s and can service them ! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wacko.png" class="smilie" alt="" />



anyone here with that amazon 968 , and if so, just curious - why the dealer instead of an independent mechanic ?

It only takes one tech with 20+years experience to be knowledgeable on these cars, i have 2 dealers equidistant from me, and only one invites older cars, plus they have great wholesale parts.



Fortunately where i am, Suncoast Porsche only charges $80/hour, for cars older than 1999. They have a race shop, prepping cars for Sebring and Daytona.and are always loaded with old cars. I have been surprised.



Maybe the owner will chime in.

They charge different hourly rates for older vehicles vs new ones ?! I can understand the number of hours difference for the same job on an old car vs a new one , but that's interesting..wonder what drives a different rate, perhaps trying to get more business from owners who are probably looking for independent mechanics after the first decade or whatnot of dealer service..

( I assume that pre-1999 rate is considerably lower than the standard rate )

Yes $80/hr vs. upt $120/hr for other vehicles.



They are very active in PCA events, and welcome older cars,,from maint., to performance. They have the right staff to handle all the unique needs. They did my M030 bars, and were cheaper than anyone else, parts and labor. And we have plenty of good shops in Tampa/Sarasota to choose from.



I would have never kown, if i had not been to one of their dinner PCA events, and offered discounts for members on top of labor rate.



Cool stuff, maybe others will follow suit.

With something like 80% of Porsches made (don't I is how this statistic works when you consider 924's, Cayeene's etc), you would think that the Dealer is missing out on a hell of a lot of work if it is only doing logbook services for newer cars and warranty. Most older cars are more interesting to work on as well.



Perhaps with Porsche getting into the restoration business, they are looking to expand.



Either way, it is a good thing, as long as competition does not disappear and the prices go back up again.



It would be interesting to know what the split is (in terms of vehicle demographics) of vehicles 5 years or less (most likely to use an official Porsche Dealer) versus older cars. I would bet that the market is heavily skewed in Cavour of the older cars - by number.

i can check, but i understand the rates here in norcal, depending on the county, range from $ 150 - 200 / hr

Here in Australia, where everything is expensive, don't pay that for mechanics who travel to a minesite in a vehicle.



Normal labour over here for a vehicle service would be around the $90 to $110 per hour. Not sure what Porsche would charge, but $200 seems way over the top.



What would a Porsche mechanic make in terms of a wage per year? Over here, multiply it by 2.5 and you roughly get a sell price (divided by the hours worked). But we have 6% payroll tax, 9% superannuation, minimum 4 weeks annual leave, 9 days sick leave, long service leave after 10 years, 13 public holidays per year, etc.



$200 makes $80 per hour look fantastic.
