Bonhams Auction 1994 Coupe with just over 4k mi
#1

Friend of mine pointed this out to me.  It's a 718 code, i.e. a late 93 model carried over to 1994.  With only 4,200 miles it's quite a rare find but it's also expected to fetch a price between 55k and 75k.

What really makes it unique are the compartments in the engine bay that don't appear in a 1994 build because they were discontinued as of that model year.

The engine looks horrible and a lot older than 4200 miles, it looks even worse than mine after 237000 kilometers.

Agreed , something is just not right with that .. Maybe should have spent the money to powder-coat or paint the cam covers . Also, for only that little mileage there are a lot of creases on the driver's seat so unless the prevous owner weighs 300 + lbs, that's questionable wear .. And as if I'm not done trashing this car ( with all due a respect to , and apologies to red 968 owners ) that's historically the least in-demand color for our cars.. If anyone pays more than $ 25 K for it, I wish them all the best but it better be for love of the car, and not for investment expectations . IMHO

I’ve noticed differences between my 92, 93, and 94. Expect this might be due to handmade and the cross pollination of parts. That engine doesn’t look like any of mine.

Did anyone notice that the cruise control cable is incorrectly placed over the engine?

I agree, it does not look like a $50000 car.

Here is my engine. The engine covers back (courtesy of Flash). As mentioned they where deleted on the "real" 1994.

Early seats, no?

Zero visible wear on the shift knob, which appears consistent with stated mileage. And the labels on the mirror etc switches have no wear. Mileage is likely legit.

Factory firing order sticker on dizzy cap. They must have changed the plugs/wires and didnt pay attention to how to route the cc cable. Odd for a high end auction...

Gauge surround has some fungus going on. That would drive me nuts. Also $55k on the low end and they couldnt source an OEM tape deck?

I would not, though, kick it out of the garage for eating crackers.

This car was sold in Harrisburg PA in 1994.  I wonder how long it stayed in the northeast and how it was stored.

Engine bay seems to have a lot of oxidation especially for a car of this mileage.

Lug nuts have a lot of wear for the mileage

Speedo bezel  - Is that oxidation?

Missing the antenna mast?

Trim molding around side skirts is partially missing at the drivers door to left front fender area?

As to early seats, it's a 93 with the 718 option so it would have the 93 style seats.

been serviced by a muppet, the cruise throttle cable is over the fuel rail cover and will be damaging it,

so its a cheap car,

75k plus commission, recommissioning the thing, 5K, all the naff rubber bits and cosmetics...

will it ever be worth more than the 75k unlikely, even 55k is a massive stretch, be interesting to see what happens,

If someone purchases it for a high price this will likely attract attention to the 968 from collectors. Whether the attention stays active or not remains to be seen. Remember markets often move by these types of seemingly thoughtless actions. Anything that focuses positive attention on our 968's is a good thing. Unless of course someone decides to put their 968 up for sale as the ultimate chick magnet.

This is just like my cab, a '93 revinned by Porsche in 94.  It has all the 93 features, seats, engine bay trim, Factory Cup 1's (worth 3K alone in that shape)

Door handle gaskets are as deteriorated/non existent as my 140K cab??  Certainly sun and time age these and not mileage but you would think with real low miles in that range many things would look a little more pristine.

Don's car had roughly 13K on it when he sold. Maybe there is a glut of rarely driven 968 Red Coupes in Central PA  Wink

Jay

One would think that if you have a pristine, low mileage car (of any ilk) that if you wanted top dollar (i.e. Bonhams Auction)  that you would have the car carefully serviced and detailed to avaoid all of these troubling questions.

That's what I remembered. Wonder if Jeff Coe has spotted this one and if he has any interesting observations ?

Hey, regardless of what I ( and others ) may say, I hope it sells for $ 75 K or more . You can use that data point in your favor to argue with the insurance company if your 968 is ever totaled . ( price adjusted for mileage of course ) .

Good point. Because our ownership is such a small segment there may not be many 968 experts for these potential buyers to tap for advice. Still seems sort of high. Although Dan I believe you have often said your sale price would be in this range. Mine too!

I have mine ( the six speed one ) insured for an agreed value at $ 75 K, so not worried about sales data that much, unless some SC'd 968 sells for $ 250 K. at a future auction   Which btw, is my new updated price in case anyone is interested, although I'm not certain I'd part with it even then.. and I'm NOT kidding, it has become an emotional attachment which is almost invaluable .  But for $ 250 K  I can probably   find another Iris Blue six speed coupe in mint condition, use the other 968 as the donor car for the SC transfer and then pay for Bob's flight from Ireland to come here and remap a new chip,  and still come out ahead   Big Grin

I think this car most likely has a rolled-back odometer. Nothing about it says 20000 miles. I hope it get's $75000....then I can get $100000 for mine (LOL)
