salvage title ?
#1

Hi -

I'm new to the list, I recently initiated my search for a 968. Was wondering what a "salvage title" is....sounds bad, like the car was recked and what fully restored etc.

What are peoples opinions buying such a car?

I used to own a 93 VW Corrado VR6, and since then have sworn allegience to german engineering. I am located in Somerville, MA - If anyone knows of any cars for sale in that area please give me shout. I'm not ready to buy any time soon, for now I need to save up the pennies and research/find the right car for me. - E

I've heard of cars getting a salvage title from things as small as a recovered theft and as serious as flood damage. You’re going to have to do research as to why the car carries a salvage title. Unfortunately I cant speak from experience. I've never dealt w/ salvage before but I would try the DMV in the state that the car is located in first.

i have - it really can be from almost anything - confiscated cars, cars with damage that exceed blue book, theft recovery - i've bought and sold a couple over the years - do the homework on the car, just like any other - may be harder to sell, but can be just as solid a car if you want to keep it

salvage cars make very inexpensive race cars too

I agree, I recently lost a 944 s2 during katrina, it had a salvage title prior to the hurricane, and i got it for dirt cheap. Solid car with the engine just rebuilt. It belonged to some little league, baseball coach. His car was stolen and the interior stripped. A shop replaced everything with parts from the Rennsport across the street. The car was definitely worth the money. There are, mine inclusive, many gems with "salvage" titles. Take it from my experience, it's cheap way into a great car, just takes a bit of research.

Ultimately, i wish i bought back the car. I didn't know they took the car, for i was displaced at the time in the boondocks of North Carolina where you don't get any cell phone service. When they arrived to claim the car, that is my s2, they started towing my 83 944, which was also flooded but alas no comprehensive, my dad went outside and said " you have the wrong car... the one you want is in the garage."

When i tried to find it to buy it back, it was crushed. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I did get high NADA for it ... regardless of the salvage title. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

With the vin# you can order a carfax report. It's available at carfax.com.

The last time I checked it was about $25. Or, just post on this board and someone may be able to help you out.

Basically, its a DMV check of all reported accidents. It's always a good idea to have one.
