Is this for real? Let me check my calendar - no, it isn't April 1. There must be a catch, like this thing costs half a million bucks to make...

looks like it's real. it's all over the internet, including an article about it at a car show.

i am looking forward to the natural gas fuel cell that is just about ready. that would knock my electric bill down quite a bit. probably a year out still though.

Typically our electricity bill is $ 400/ mo. ( +/- $ 50 ) most of the year because I use the heck out of the AC since I like my entire house to be no warmer than 68 degrees ..and maybe $ 200 ( more or less around that ) during the one or two so-called cooler months . Water bill is no walk in the park either - fairly consistent at $ 250 / mo year-round, except lately where by virtue of the drought, they raised the rates considerably ( over a certain usage ) to penalize us.. No, I'm not converting to solar panels, I refuse to have anything that ugly on the roof of the house, no matter how practical and cost-saving of an alternative it provides. Form over function baby ! ,lol.

my bill ranges from 200-560, depending on the month.

i am a firm believer in solar, but i just did an analysis and it still doesn't make financial sense to me. if i were to stay here for 20 years, it would be a no brainer. however, given that we want to move to a bigger house in 3 years, it would cost me more to put it up than i would save (even on one of those nothing down no cost ppa deals) as i would have to change my power panel, and would have to do roof work to prep for it.

when we build the new house, a large part of the roof will be solar panels. it will be the roof itself though, and not just something stuck on the roof.

Holy crap! You guys are wimps, lol. Your bills would be over $1000 a month in the summer in a place like Texas or Arizona. I have an older (mid 80's), ~2600 square foot house with very inefficient AC units that refuse to die (otherwise I would have replaced them with much more efficient units years ago), and I still never get much over $400 a month in the middle of a Texas summer. The rates must be much higher in California.

i have a tiered rate structure. tier 4 (the highest tier) comes in pretty early, and is .389/kwh. i generally use about 1700 kwh in the hot summer months.

the house is a 2 story about 3300 and change square feet.

i have 2 ft of blown in insulation in the attic. i have R-19 in the attic rafters, and R-13 in all exterior walls. i have double pane insulated UV tinted windows everywhere. the flat section of roof is painted reflective white. the house has been painted a light color. the garage doors are R-11 insulated. i have a 5 ton high seer rated brand new hvac system. i have a whole house fan, attic exit fans, and multiple ceiling fans. basically i've done everything possible to lower the usage.
