968 RS race car build
#1

Had a good day on the car today only a tiny bit of glue left to get rid of now (thank god!!)

I still havn't made a decision on the loom yet, there seems an awfull lot of uneeded weight in there.

My Koni 28 series dampers have also been delayed again, they didn't fit the Racers Edge camber plates so they had to go back to Koni for mods.

Thanks to Jason at Paragon for checking everything properly before they were shipped all the way to me!

Question regarding interior paint.

Is it better to have my shell interior painted before cage fitment and then paint the cage or all in one go?

Any experiences to share?

Regards

Graham,

I had a good day today also. Got Mocal radiator and fan fitted today. I am going to relocate power steering cooler and resovoir to driver side to allow more room for larger oil cooler fitment. Wow , the list goes on and on.

I'm shooting for Pocono next weekend! may not happen. All the little stuff takes much longer than anticipated.

Glad i don't have to deal with any glue. I did remove lots of wiring from front of car. I'm not running any headlights, horn etc. just coil, fans and thermo switch.

I would wait untill all cage and bracing is finished before painting.

Graham,

I would wait on the paint. Anything you do is only going to be messed up by the cage install. Just think of all the welding and metal tubing that is going to be dragged in and out of the car during fitting.

Pete - you should just get rid of all the PS crap. I think the rack feels better unassisted on the track.

How much is it to replace the power steering with a manual rack?

I'd be interested in that.

Right now I'm running the power rack unassisted. I removed the pump, pulley, resv., cooler and just plugged the lines. I did this until I have the manual rack ready, but it feels so good on the track I'm in less of a hurry to do the swap.

To do the swap you need:

Manual Steering rack from an early 944 in good condition ~$150-250

(or 944 turbo cup = $$)

Late offset tie rods for the manual rack (944.347.033.03). These are available new from Porsche ~150-160 each.

Longer intermediate steering shaft (944.347.027.01) ~$200-250 new.

I have the manual rack & tierods but I'm still missing the intermediate steering shaft.

Eric,

My car had the same setup as yours. Power rack without pulleys and lines pluged. I want to go power but I may not get it done in time . So i may get a chance to try manual.

Pete,

Why would you want to ADD the power steering to the car...more things to go wrong, overheat, and break...

To say nothing about the weight you'll be adding.

What's your reason?

Thanks guys.

I'm getting a quote on the cage hopefully this week so I'll post with the overall cost for the RS replica.

Eric did you go T45 or CDS

I can't decide...cost is a factor now so I may go CDS but the weight!!

My cage is 1.75" x .095 DOM (which I think is the same as CDS)

Graham,

Could you take another picture of the interior in the area shown here?

I'm trying to route some wiring through there and the car isn't being very cooperative. The dotted solid line represents the wire path and the red box is the area of interest.

Apologies for the hijack <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Well,

I've just been scouring the legislation in the MSA blue book and an RS replica cage should be ok for both sprints and circuit racing.

It won't be FIA approved but I doubt I'll be racing internationally just yet anyway ;-)

It also shouldn't be a problem to upgrade it with triangulation to make it FIA approved at a later date.

I also have had a cool idea of how I can work the dash around it, either that or I'll buy a carbon dash from GT racing.

Does anybody know if they are all carbon or GF with a carbon top layer?

Graham,

I got close to finishing the wire running so I went ahead and closed it out. See the gauge pod post under Modifications. The picture I requested is no longer needed for my mod but it could be helpful to others.

Thanks!
