RS Barn Header
#1

I recently installed the RS Barn header and test pipe on my race car. I don't have before and after dyno results (Pete can provide those), but the difference is noticeable.

For reference, my previous setup was the stock headers running thru a stock gutted cat and a B&B catback. The header is a nice 4 into 1 design, a real beauty. The install was a snap as the header bolted right up. The test pipe took a little wrestling to get hooked up with the B&B, but in the end it all hooked up with no leaks. The first test was a race in Portland one week ago.

The first thing I noticed was how different the car sounded. It was louder and the tone has more of a bark to it. It really sounded like a race car now. The trackside sound meter at Portland was reading 5db (93) louder with this setup. I'm no longer the quietest car out there!

So how did it perform? Great. I was able to get a couple hundred more revs at of the end of the straights. But best of all I was able to lower my best time at the track by 8/10s of a second, down to a 1:27.6. At this point a .8 sec improvement is big for me. It is bit unscientific of a test but the only change to the car was the exhaust. It is definitely a worthy improvement.

I was looking forward to trying it out this weekend at Pacific Raceways, but the whole weekend was a sloppy wet mess. I was just happy to leave with the car in one piece. About 10 other cars were heavily damaged in accidents. Next is the Cascade 8 hour endurance race in Portland.

Big thanks to Pete for putting forth the effort to develop stuff for our cars.

Looks very nice. Am I right in assuming that your setup would be too loud for a street car?

I guess that would be personal preference. I would think if you ran a cat converter, it would muffle the sound quite a bit. Its still not that loud, but you would definitely not be in stealth mode anymore.

Eric's setup with the car was based on his previous setup. He used the RS Barn Header with test pipe and B&B catback exhaust. The B&B is loud with the stock header and stock cat. I believe my quieter system is better than B&B setup.

My setup is with RS Barn Header, test pipe or high flow cat and RS Barn cat back. My system is only a bit louder than stock (much less than B&B alone) and has a nice tone without any resonance. I tested about a dozen exhaust systems to get to this point. I realized most people who will use a Header/back system are going to drive on the street and must be acceptable for that enviroment.

The other result of the header is the major Hp/Torque improvement at 2500/

3500RPM with a steady improvement to 7000RPM or so. Eric only drives above 4000RPM and feels the extended power.

I want Eric to test the quiet system for more power but he may not want to now that his car is faster and meaner at the track. Racers want their competitors to hear them closing and get out of the way.

I also want Eric to test a RS Barn intake and chip that were designed for the Header.

I'm sure there is plenty to be gained by going to a system (intake, cams, exhaust, chip, etc) where everything is tuned to work together instead of piece mealing parts from here and there.

Bring it on Pete!
