I have exactly one Stones album - the 1971 Hot Rocks.

Don't know offhand which vinyl Stones albums I have. However, I watched their BRIEF appearance at the Sandy benefit concert Wed night. Frankly they looked like they just wanted to get out of there. And I gotta say to quote the Eagles "lines on the mirror, lines on the face" ole Mick is really showing his age.

My god, Voodoo Lounge is almost 20 years old!!!! I've seen the Stones 3 or 4 times. Always put on a great show. And I love the story behind the Sticky Fingers album cover (the one with the zipper). When the album first shipped, the zipper created an imprint on the vinyl disk and they all had to be returned. They were about to scrap the cover when someone figured out it would work if they shipped the albums unzipped, and zipped them up at the retail stores.

My band plays a couple of Stones' tunes.

But when all is said and done, there is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert! (And, currently, Further.)

The show was incredible. Mick Taylor joined them on stage for Midnight Rambler. They delivered the goods for a solid 2 hours. Nothing like the 12-12-12 thing that they didn't want to do. I will post videos of some of the songs. They rocked the house.

lol - it's amazing what 6 shots of tequila or a couple of hits of a doobie will do for what your "appreciation" of music. any world where the stones seem "good" is an altered one. original, yes, tonally good, not a chance.

hopefully someday a band with talent will start covering their tunes. the songs are decent, but the execution is lame. if you can't close your eyes and say "that is perfect" then there is a failing. music should not be visually dependent.

Here are some clips from the show I attended. I think you will agree that they sounded good and had plenty of energy.

They may not look so young, but their performance hasn't really suffered at all.

yeah - i listened - mix was pretty bad, but of course it was a cell phone recording. as for the performance, the drummer was all over the place in and out of time and rushing fills. mick was flat a lot. background vocals not on cue.

but i'm REALLY picky about this kind of stuff, because it's what i do for a living. most people would never pick up on a lot of it.

all that being said, nobody ever accused them of being great musicians or particularly technical. what they are goes beyond that. it's more of an "x" factor thing with them. there are others like that too (bob dylan, tom petty, neil young, john denver, barry manilow, yada yada).

it's not like i cringe when i hear them or anything, i listen to them from time to time, and i still like a lot of the songs. i just prefer somebody else doing them.

This thread needs to end. Too much critique. You like 'em or you don't. I do. And have for a long time. I like other bands too, most of the ones mentioned here. Over and out.

almost no thread ever needs to end. intelligent people here have been able to express themselves without getting emotional. the only time we get into trouble is when somebody's intellect fails them, and their emotions take over. that never needs to happen. just turn off your emotions. it's really a fairly simple thing to do. i love that we can have discussions with people of directly opposing points of view, and we manage to keep them civilized.

as for liking them or not being the only two choices, sorry, but i don't feel one way or the other. some of the songs i find evocative, and some i find boring or trite. i find mick's voice annoying and discordant, and the musicianship of the band generally lacking, but that isn't the entire recording either, and there can still be components i like. as i said, i have some of the recordings, and listen to them from time to time. i listen to all sorts of music, from mozart to metallica. i've had the benefit of working with some of the greatest musicians in the world. i have developed an appreciation that exceeds any one component, member, or piece.

there is room for all points of view on this, and i encourage people to pick things apart, as well as praise them. you can't truly appreciate something, until you know why you like it, and why you don't like something else. threads like this help that process.

lol - play yes, sing, no - lead vocalist is all over the place, in and out of pitch, backgrounds are weak, but the instrumental arrangement is clever and catchy.
