Roll 'em out
#1

People thought I was crazy in 1989 for driving 3+ hours to see that washed up band called the Rolling Stones. Maybe so, but 23 years later, I'm doing it again tomorrow night to see them in Newark, New Jersey. My weekend starts tonight!

This might be the last time. This might be the last time. It may be the last time, I don't know.

Hmmm... I will probably take a lot of flack for this, but I think the Stones would have gone down as a great band if they had split up, in, say, 1971. Love their early stuff, though. I'm sure they put on a good show, though, so it should be a good time.

Ive said that about the Who. Both just flat out great bands! More Stones have managed to live than the Who but the music still touches that ole soul.

Some of their later stuff is pretty darn good. They didn't generate hits and classics, but there are quality tracks on the later albums. I liked Steel Wheels, Voodoo Lounge, and Bridges to Babylon.

I've seen the Stones a bunch of times but my brother-in-law never has. So I'm taking him and my sister. I get the pleasure of driving up and back from Maryland.

Word is that there will be a World Tour in 2013 with shows as far away as Australia. I don't want to miss out on seeing them at least one more time ... because you never know. Keith Richards could fall out of another coconut tree. It damn near killed him.

I have never seen the Stones. Who a couple of times. Stones are consummate showmen. Enjoy. Wish I was going. Instead I'm with my youngest shopping for a dress for the company xmass party. Tama where are you? Lol

I saw the Who in something like 1982. Best concert I ever went to - simply amazing. Man, that was a long time ago...

not really my favorite band. it's amazing how well they have done with a singer that can't carry a tune in a bucket, a drummer who hasn't figured out what a couple of pieces of his kit are for, a guitarist who can barely stand, and then well.......ronnie. still, better than bob dylan though.

they used to do some club dates while on tour. i caught one of those. very different vibe, and kinda cool.

Never got into them but give them much respect. I'd love to see them regardless. Saw Rush a few weeks ago when them came through Philadelphia. Another great band with decades of rockin'.

TSBeckman, I hope you have a great time!!! Cheers!

I was always a Pink Floyd kinda guy, but I've gotta give the Stones due respect. Mother's little helper, Paint it Black, and Sympathy for the Devil are on constants on my various playlists.

Yes, along with Gimme Shelter, Ruby Tuesday, and Angie, a lot of their early stuff was great. Since then, it seems that they've sort of "phoned it in." But then, this is very common. After all, 50 years of continuously great music is an awful lot to ask.

I have about 375 Rolling Stones albums, about 50 singles, about 40 books, about 70 CDs, a hand painted picture of Mick, 3 clocks, etc, etc. I have been to see them 8 times, difficult when you live in Bugtussle, and have no sympathy for you devils if you can't get into the Stones. It's ony rock and roll but I like it, like it, yes I do.

Kim,

Somehow, the word "moderation" doesn't seem to be the first word that comes to mind when trying to describe you <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Having just watched 12/12/12 on TV, that had to be the largest gathering of elder British rockers ever assembled. Good stuff though.

Well. You have misised a lot. Most of the records were also issued with different covers and even different song lists in other countries. Some were issued in coloured vinyl. Some in Box sets. Some as bootlegs, Some as promo stuff. Some as half-speed masters. Some as box sets of half-speed masters. etc. And I forgot to add the 20 odd DVDs that I have as well. Plus the 5 albums released only in MP3 format.

I started collecting when I was 16 with my first album being Get Yer Ya Yas Out. I have graphs of albums per year starting then. I have over 10 different formats/copies/colours of that one album, which was recorded on a night at MSG when the Rolling Stones were the greatest rock and roll band in the world.

I couldn't always get what I wanted but, by cracky, I've got what I need. And I am still collecting now. All Right!

hmmm - that's the list when you do a search. it does show releases in the uk versus us, which would increase the number. it also showed a number for each column, but i thought that was it's position. i wonder if it was the number of releases? i know some of them had different covers (like "some girls" - that was a big deal back then)

at any rate, that's sure dedication, obsession, insanity, or however you like to describe it. i collected all of the different 968 metal cars too. not logical. just did it. no worries

This coming from a guy who replaces his spark plugs after 5 drives? hmmmm. Obsession? It "My Obsession".

lol - i think i indicated that i am just as guilty of obsessive behavior with the comment about my illogical collection of toy cars (my 968 poster collection would be another one)

as for changing the spark plugs, this would be no different than cleaning the record before playing it. you would never play a dirty record. every time i take the car out, it gets a complete once-over first. that way, i get the most out of it every time i drive it. my car is purely a toy after all, and not a commuter. that's not obsession. that's just common sense. i don't do that with the other cars.

but whatever. i have 1 or 2 stones albums. that's all i need. some of their songs are cool. i just wish somebody else was performing and/or recording them.
