Rewire Sunroof switch
#1

Has anyone ever looked into rewiring the sunroof switch so that up is forward in stead of back? just seems more logical to be that way and I'm thinking of moving window switch to the center console and then they would currently be the reverse of each other. I though I could just flip it around, but the switch is made to go only the one way (though a little demral work could probably fix that) and of course I would have to work on the decal - couldn't have the car upside down...

thanks Sam

pretty easy to rewire a switch - cut - strip - crimp

i moved my window switches to the center console, and the mirror selector to the door by the adjuster - involved jumper wires back and forth - not too bad of a job

Just between us coupe guys, you don't need to cut wires to do this.

I did this a couple of years ago and posted on the old .net site, immediately after which a couple of other people posted other answers too. It would be good for somebody to check the schematic since my memory is known not to be, umh, I forget the words.

But you can do it by:

1. pull out console (4 screws and maybe some fooling with the shift lever, IIRC).

2. reach behind and, while swearing, pull off the connector from the back of the switch. Swearing is essential because in order to remove the connector you have to squeeze 1 or 2 plastic release clips, unfortunately you don't know where the clips are until you get the connector off and can have a good look at it.

3. Now you can easily pop open the back of the connector, pull the wires (with end plugs) out of the connector body and reverse them, leaving the middle one(s) where it is.

I think somebody else told me you can also just pop the connector back on the switch "upside-down," but I don't know, YMMV.

Of course if you're like me you may have pulled the connector open trying to get it off the switch so you'll have to figure out where the wires go. Thanks to Eric the schematics are in the DIY section.

Just ignore the switch marking, once the switch works in the correct direction you'll never look at it. If you REALLY must fix it, I think the white paint is pretty soluble in alcohol, just wipe out one of the pictures so the switch meaning is clear and the direction is now intuitive.

lol - yeah - for the flipping of the switch, you can certainly pull the wires and switch pin orientation if you have the pin tool to release the little tang that holds it in there

You can also take off the sunroof switch cover and put it back on the way you want it. You don't have to rewire anything but if the sunroof switches are like the window switches then there are two ball bearings and the copper contact strip in there that can be a pain to put back in if they fall out.

I agree with you that it would be easier if the functions were reversed but maybe Porsche kept the logic the same as the window switches - pressing up closes the window/sunroof and pressing down opens them.

I never needed a tool, just brute force and massive ignorance. Seriously, you can pop open the back of the connecter with your fingernail, it's a lot easier than getting the connector off the switch (or maybe that's what you were talking about). And then the wires with the pin ends fall right out, whether you want them to or not. I also rewired the rear wiper switch (I deleted the rear wiper) to activate my garage door opener, so I've seen the inside of more than one of these switches.

Flash,

I was sure you were going to advocate cutting and splicing the wires because if you solder the wires back together you could reduce the length of the wires by maybe a full inch, shaving, hell, 4 or 5 grams off the weight of the car, using lead-free solder of course. I don't worry about the weight of my car, the driver is sasquatch.

Moses: How did you rewire the rear wiper switch with your garage door opener?

roflmao - nah - i solved that one by going fiber optic everywhere that was left, and besides, i don't have windows anymore anyway

oh wait - that was the mgb - having a flashback - i have GOT to stop buying my drugs at the elementary school, and start getting them from a reputable dealer

Rewiring the door opener is no big deal, at least with my opener which just has one big button. You open up the remote control, find the two leads from the switch, cut them (or unsolder the switch and solder to the PC board donuts), open up the console, find the leads from the wiper switch (one from the middle and one from the top), cut them, attach the switch leads to the remote probably using a short piece of twin lead. Done. I tucked the remote behind the CD storage tray (which is below the player and immediately in front of the shift lever) because the tray will just pull out so I can replace the battery in the remote easily. But you can buy a lithium 9V for the remote which, in the case of my remote, wouldn't need to be replaced for quite a few years. I suppose the range of the remote is reduced by its location but it's good enough for me.

It would be better if the wiper switch were a momentary contact because with this you have to flip the switch on then switch it right off again. It's a terrible burden but surprisingly none of my friends will offer me any support for having to actually turn off the remote control automatic garage door opener in my Porsche. Go figure.

Flash: fiber optics, of course, I should have thought of that, apologies. You have my sympathy about not being able to find a good drug pusher. One of the benefits of living in a college town like mine is the large number of well-established drug dealers. If you believe the papers they include a local doctor/clinic owner and a police chief, how much more respectable can you get than that? Of course dealing with students all the time means you NEED the drugs, so it's kind of a wash. But it's nice to have options.
