Resetting the airbagwarning light
#81

Yes, scantool works at 9600 baud. No trouble codes. )

Now I want to see these analogue inputs.

I can not send you a PM, do not now why.

I have built the interface on from the drawing that is included in the scantool.zip; I am not having any luck connecting. I have reviewed the solutions on here and on RL. I have read alot about the jumper settings on the "Andy board" but can anyone help me ensure the jumper settings on the Gregg K interface. Currently I have J3 and J4 connected so that R1-in is connected to pin 3 on the DB-9 and J6 and J7 are connected so that T1-out is connected to pin 2 on the DB-9.

I have checked the serial cables and the pin out to the 19 pin. Also the power side of the circuts show correct voltages on the 12v side and 5v sides when plugged in.

I did not use any LEDs on the board since issues were reported with the power LED and I wanted to keep this simple.

The one item I will check this morning is some reports of spread pins on the Chassis side of the 19 pin connector for the K/L lines.

Any other Ideads?

Thanks,

Andrew

First thing to do is follow the diagnostic info on the build sheet (somewhere It tells you how to short the inputs and run the software. There is a line you have to monitor with a DVM and it verifies if the cct is actually switching into data mode. If this switch doesn't happen then the cct needs attention and not the car.

My first question is what software do you use? win2000 or XP? Do not use a usb connector for the rs232 connector.

It runs fine on XP but you do have to be careful with the serial port. I use an old laptop with a real serial port. Earlier USB/Serial converters were notorious for poor emulation. I just bought a new USB converter and tested it with a laptop that had no serial port and it worked fine so all is good with this one.

I haven't tested this thing yet. Luckely for me is that I have 3 olders laptops for spare with the RS232 port build in. :-)

Thanks Dave and Ritchie;

I am using an old Desktop on XP with a real serial port. I will look up the troubleshooting document to short the 2/3 pins on the 232 connector and go from there. If you have it handy please PM.

Do I need to isolate the A-GRD and the D-GRD even though they show a connection on Greg K.'s diagram?

Thanks again,

Andrew

Doing a bit of research on this, and I've gone and ordered a bunch of cheap cables which I'll use for parts. The 19-pin OBD-1 to OBD-2 adapter cable is now $8.15 with free shipping on eBay, for instance. It won't get the job done alone, and an OBD-2 scanner won't work even if plugged into it, but it gets me halfway home just by having the 19-pin end on the cable.

One thing I noticed just above, for future edification, is the mention of serial ports being necessary (DB9 or 9-pin) and then a reference to RS-232, which is not a serial port, it is a parallel port (DB25 or 25-pin). The two are not interchangeable and if anyone in the future is reading through this and using the notes to collect parts or put together their own solution, I just want to clarify that point.

And to further clarify, RS-232 is a serial data protocol or language for the non-geeks among us. There are standards for both a 9 pin version AND a 25 pin version but as stated, shouldn't be confused with a parallel port. Nowadays, everything is USB, so you can get a Serial USB to 9 pin adapter and it will work fine.

+1 for Darrly clarification. RS-232 and cousin RS-422 are software specifications and not physical specs as are DB-xx.

Kudos to the OBD-I to OBD-II converter idea though. I use 2 pins to plug into the correct holes in the 19 pin connector as the real connector was some ludicrous 100.00 but getting one of the cheap adapter cables would allow me to cut off one end and at least have a proper male connector.

For the layman, any slightly aged laptop people are likely to have on the shelf to do this sort of thing will likely have a DB25, and it *will* be a parallel (printer) port. There hasn't been a 25-pin serial port on a popular computer in about 20 years. Generally (but safely) speaking, if it's a 25-pin port, it's parallel and it won't work...

If it is a 25 pin female on the computer it will be a printer port, serial ports will be male. Most laptops used 9 pin serial ports

Last month I bought a 19 pins Porsche connector to a obd cable in an action for 1 GBP on ebay. Only the cost for the post where 6 pound. Last saturday I had to install it because the airbag light went on because of a flat battery. I had to reset the light now for the third time since I have the car. For some reasons I could not get the 12 volt out of the plug. So I picked it up from the battery directly. After that the board ran wel and the light was out. I had code 30.

What did you use to reset the airbag light? The cable was, I'm assuming, just a cable?

Yes the cable was the cable. I used the Ecufix board as discribed on the first page of this topic. The cable is handy for the 19 pins connector to plug in the porsche.

Ritchie, there are two types of adapter cable available with different wirings for the +12V pin. Type A for use e.g. with the Durametric OBD2 cable connects pin 13 of the 19 pin plug to pin 1 (!) of the OBD2 connector. Type B connects pin 13 to pin 16, this is the standard connection.

thanks in advance. I just made a bypass for the 12 volt in combination with the obd2 connector. I bought the 19 pins/obd2 connector on ebay for 1 GBP. :-)

I won an auction...... only postage was 7 GBP. :-(
