Replace or not?
#1

Starting to gather parts for my winter project which is replacing some of the worn front suspension parts. Got the Koni Sport inserts, getting the tie rod assemblies, rebuilt lower control arms, wheel bearings ect. Looking through the forums, some say I should replace the strut mounts when they look like this. Some say no. How say ye? I have a knack to replace good parts with, well, other good parts gaining no improvement. The top steel ring looks like it has shifted 1/8" inward.

I'd replace them if since you already have done everything else.

Here's a thread flash made about this:

That's my intention. Just hoping it's not a waste of another $700 to do so.I noticed that Flash made reference to replacing a pair, then a couple years later they started to look the same. I gotta think Porsche designed these for more than a couple years of service.

"so, i started looking at the design to see what i could do. in doing that i also noticed that my mounts are starting to go. i replaced them a few years ago when i installed the first set of struts. however, they are already showing signs of failure. you can see this from the way the upper plate is pushing upward and inward."

Not likely to happen now with the winding down of D1R, but I'm still hoping Flash might one day get back on his idea to design and manufacture (or have someone else manufacture) an OEM style 944/968 strut mount replacement, as the factory part is so ridiculously expensive and running camber plates produces an unacceptable ride on a street car.

nope. not going to get into it, no matter what happens with D1R. the OEM units are a good design, and actually quite complicated. not much chance of doing better. i've made the mistake of trying out camber plates too. HORRIBLE ride degradation.

the problem here is that if you increase spring rate and or dampening, you increase load on the mount, thereby shortening its life. it's almost a direct percentage increase too. my springs are twice as stiff as stock, so i'll get half as much life at best.

no free ride here.
