Repaininting of your Wheels
#1

I was considering buying new wheels for my 95 M030 limited slip 968. But I could not justify the cost. I ended up taking then to a local shop here in Oregon called SKIP'S WHEELWERKS 503-641-8001. I am so glad I did. Skip who has been doing this for 30 years did a fantastic job. First he striped them down to bare metal, re-primed them painted them back to silver (my choice of color)and then put a heavy clear coat on them. Now brake dust does not stick to the wheels, easy to keep clean, and look brand new. I would recommend him to anyone who wants that new look. He charged me $175 per wheel which included stripping the tire off the wheel and then remounting the tire and balancing them. He also does hand painting of the center caps besides polishing and repainting. I tried to photograph them but all you see is a clean wheel as a photo does not do it justice.

I've had one wheel repaired (due to a crack) and refinished. It had some curb rash on it too and now does indeed look brand new. Will probably do the other three at some point. Not a bad deal at all - I paid $150 for the one wheel, including tire dismount and remount. And that price also included my choice of powdercoat color (I went with the standard silver of course), chrome or polishing. Wheels America in Santa Fe Springs, CA (not affiliated, just a happy customer).

On that topic... I dropped off my wheels at a local powder coater in Auburn, Maine called PPPI (http://www.powderpaintme.com/). They will strip a wheel and repaint it in a much more durable powder coat finish for as little as $75 a wheel. I special ordered an expensive bronze finish so they are charging me all of $90 a wheel. I work at a car dealership so I have experience working with wheel repair companies. Results can truly run the gamet and normal paint doesn't always hold up as well on wheels. The downside is that I did have to dismount tires myself before giving them my wheels. Cost me a six pack of beer for a technician out back.

It's getting harder to find the "will work for 6-pak" guys these days. I was quoted $50.00 each for powder-coat per wheel if no sanding work was required from a source in town. So it sounds like powder-coating is the cheap way to go as far as refinishing goes. $175.00 each is a bit high for me as you can purchase many aftermarket wheels for that. Not for the 968 maybe, but...still.

I was quoted $125 at an LA chromer if I dismount, drop off and pick up. Not bad.

yeah - powdercoating is relatively inexpensive - the issue is if there are gouges in the rim

They did mention that the filler used by wheel repair guys doesn't hold up in the ovens.

Is there a filler (or other repair) that does hold up?

not that i know of - you could weld them up, and then grind them down though

In the east SF BAY area there is a powdercoat source know as Maas Bros. for $105 per wheel the remove the original material (Which also removes most of the rash) and shoot the color. They have samples of over 1000 colors. I took me over 2 hours to select the orange I wanted for the 18" BBS I just put on my coupe. If you want clear coat they charge another 50%, or $205. I have used them for these jobs.

Speed yellow on 18" turbo twist wheels on a red 968 Cab.

Gloss black 18" 10 spoke OEM wheels on a blue 968 coupe.

Guard's red 17" Cup wheels on a white 968 coupe.

Antracite grey 17" cup wheels on a gray 968 Cab.

Orange 18" BBS wheels on a midnight blue 968 coupe.

Also in the East Bay in Pittsburg, Ca is Pacific Rim who will black chrome for a startling great look. I have a set of BBS on a Black 968 Cab.

I repainted the wheels myself, with the tires on and masking them. Did three coats of silver and three of clear coat, came out awesome. Also painted the lug nuts flat black. The paint is cheap, and so is my time since I am retired. You can easily do one wheel per day, and just leave the car on the jack.
