I pulled mine out from the top. I had a guy with a lot of experience help me, and after a good half hour of head-scratching and measuring, we didn't see any way to get it out from the bottom, given the limitations my jack's ability to lift the car. With a lift, and a tall ceiling, I'm sure it could be taken out from the bottom, but I ended up removing it from the top, and had no problems. One thing that helped was a load leveler from Harbor Freight - it gave us an extra dimension of control over the tilt angle of the engine as we were pulling it out, and it also helped a lot when we put it back in.
The other thing I would recommend is to not completely remove the hood, because it's such a pain to put it back on. If I had it to do over again, I'd disconnect the struts, allowing the hood to be pulled back farther, and somehow suspending it from the ceiling. Good luck.
