Recommendation for a Scan Tool
#1

Hi Everyone,

I already have a Scan Tool that works on the 955 (Cayenne S), except it doesn't allow for resetting the mileage warning for when the next maintenance due point as well as not providing proprietary Porsche codes stored in the computer. It is helpful for diagnosis of set error codes, giving the live temperature of transmission fluid during changes, etc.

It would be very helpful if I could get a Scan Tool that works on the 968 (resetting the airbag light/stored codes, etc.) and other newer Porsches.

Is there such a tool available? What tool do you recommend and from which vendor?

If not, which tool do you recommend (that is available today) for the 968. And which Tool for the 955?

Thanks!

The only tool that will work on both, is the enthusiast Durametric with the optional 19 pin adaptor

The kit will only do 3 cars

If not then you will need two

PIWIS for the Cayenne and Bosch Hammer or durametric for the 968

The reason for this is the 968 is pre OBDII standard and talks its own code, the Cayenne also speaks Porsche but has to comply with ODB and CANBUS

Thanks Martin,

That helps a lot with my search for a Scan Tool!

Yes, as it turns out, my only car with OBDII is the 955/Cayenne. All my other vehicles (including German & American cars, British and Japanese motorcycles) are pre-OBD...

for 968, buy  TORE OBD for 80 euros with freeware scanner,  i dont think buying durametric because of this, or hammer is worth the price.

Thanks very much for the information.

Since I really only need to review set error codes and reset the computer (if needed), $1,600+ seems too much to pay for my quite limited needs.

With that said, I'm interested in this one for the 968:

"Scantool works fine for reviewing and deleting fault codes in Porsche 968 engine control management, Air bag and Alarm system. However, it is not originally designed for using in 968, some of the engine Actual Values and others may be displayed wrongly."

Have you actually used this one? If so, what do you think?

Never used it

But I can get you the old 3.5 version of durametric and let you know where to get the cables

I have this setup, it clears codes resets the airbag, and if you tell it the cars a 964, it reads the tip gearbox ecu

I've been using the durametric software on a laptop with the OBD2 cable for my 968 and it works well.   reset airbag light after I got the car as well as monitored a lot of the settings to test stuff.

The latest Durametric monitors oil temp and other values in the ECU

My old version does not, but it was close to free, and does what I need, told me one of my knock sensors was dead, but turned out it was just a dirty plug and socket

So they are handy

All this is good to know and very helpful. Thanks everyone.

I've bought one and will update this thread when I get a chance to use it. (I'll need to get a laptop with XP on it as the software on my current laptop is a little more modern Smile)

that is the one i sugested,  best bang for the buck. i use it  for resetting airbag light, and  you can see error codes and some live values which are probably not displayed with the right factors, therefore weird or offset but does not matter.

it cannot  activate  the variocam  to test it, only durametric or KTS knows that afaik.

Anybody can report on this device? At 85$ plus 30$ adapter connecter, could be a nice budget option.

I can access the airbag, and with two or more logins with the doors closed acces to our simple motronic.

It is more than I want. Resetting the airbag is the only thing I use.

In 18 years 2 or 3 times.

I have it working , it connects to the car , had 2 fault codes 1 the O2 sensor , i replaced it a while ago , did a reset and fine .

The airbag same here did a reset , it does turn of the warning and airbag light , but i a second later it comes back on .

If however i tell it to read the airbag fault code , it comes up with no faults detected ?

anyone any ideas ?

am i correctit , it only read fault codes motronic and airbag , that is it ,  no looking into sensors etc with this setup ?
