Rear windows coming apart?
#1

Has anyone heard of the problem of the rear window letting loose from the frames on the cars. My local repair shop told me of this problem that they are starting to see and that the new part to fix it might cost as much as $4000-$5000.

it does happen - it can cost that much - there are threads here about hatch delamination - do a detailed search - you'll find quiet a few conversations about it, including what to do

search is your friend, but you must always use the extra options

When I noticed mine starting to come loose up at the top left corner I got a local body shop to glue the glass to the frame and put a black tape along the top edge to protect the glue from the sun. He charged about $100 and it has held up very well out here in sunny New Mexico. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Yeah, I got one Im rebuilding now. Well a 944 one actually, the 968 hatch is fine for now. They are pretty similar, and interchangeable tho. Brand new from Porsche, I think Porsche North Scottsdale, quoted me 2800 installed. You can tear it apart, and rebuild for a few hundred. Ive got mine down to the frame right now, going to send the glass to a tint shop, repaint outer part of the frame, and reseal.

Hi Monstrous4Banger, I'm half way through the same process. Actually not half way, I have the hatch in my workshop on the work table, all trim removed and I just started to remove the frame from the glass. The top edge of the frame, between the hinges, was relatively easy, I have created small tool to in order to remove the glue from the groove visible from top, which is working quite well, the part visible from bottom was from 90% separated. Where I do have a problem is how to cut the glue at the parts of the frame which were not delaminated at the beginning. Again I prepared special tool, 0.6mm thin flexible plate 10mm wide, with all the edges razor sharp, in order to easily slide and cut under the glass. It is working but the progress is slow and not very efficient (you have to apply a lot of force each time). I guess it will take me two weeks of late evening work to finish it with current paste.
Did you manage to find some more effective trick for cutting the glass out from the frame? The standard approach of using the cutting string is not working since it is damaging the aluminum frame.
Btw. I think that in my case the main problem were seized hinges which were hard to move by hand.
Any idea how to speed up the process? Thanks Jan

I started this tread with the question if anyone knew of the problem of the rear window coming apart. In my seach for a 968 for me I have had a few discusioons with Pete of RSBARN who told me that his glass guy has some sort of epoxy like material, that when it dries it pulls the two surfaces together. On a 968 that Pete was working on the glass guy put the expoxy materail between the glass and the frame , and with no clamps applied it pulled the two materails together and fixed the glass into the frame agin. I do not know the name of the epoxy material nor the name of the glass guy who fixed it yet. Will post if I get more info on this subject.

Has anyone used a delaminating hatch as an excuse to go ahead and replace their glass rear window with plexiglass to save a bunch of weight? Or is the method used to attach a plexiglass window to the frame different than with glass? Thanks.

Heres a tangent .. I just received a recall notice this week, related to my Mercedes indicating they discovered a problem on various 2000 - 2005 models of a possible sunroof perimeter adhesive starting to separate.. Dealers are getting the parts in and will notify you when available so you can set up an appointment for replacement ..at no cost of course ! 15-20 years later and they pay for the cost of fixing something on a car, and regardless of any external factors that may have contributed to that... would have been nice if Porsche would have done anything of the sort with the delamination issue, or the pinion bearing, or a number of other fairly common failures.. Would have, could have , should have.. didnt !

Sigh, but alas, its Porsche so not surprising ..

So did I .. except for the spoiler / wing , but any decent body shop should be able to retrofit that part on .

And I presume you can find quite a few 944 hatch backs / windows at salvage yards .

Its not the same as a rubber winged 944 there are a few holes missing, the later 944 with bridge spoiler is also wrong as the latch pin mounts are all wrong.

The seals for the hatch locks on a 968 are on the car body around the lock, on a 944 they are fixed to the hatch and the mounting is different

I have an emergency spare 944 bridge hatch in the garage

That I paid $10 for
