rear spoiler matching paint
#1

I still can't make up my mind if I like the matching color or the black one better. And I have no excuse, since I have actually seen my car right next to another Iris blue 968 that had the painted tail option. I liked it a lot, but not overwhelmingly more so than mine, and there's the dilemma. There could be a solution: I'll contact a few P salvage places and see if I can find a rear spoiler for a reasonably low price ( could care less about the shape, fading, scratches, just as long as it's not cracked ). Then I'll have that one painted, replace mine, give it six months and if ultimately I don't like it more than the black, the original goes back on and the painted one joins all the other "spare parts" under the house.

What do you guys think ? Is doing something like that just way too...whacky ?

...so much for that idea... salvage yards are not selling the tail separately - only the whole hatchback. Sure there are those rare situations where the window is smashed and then there is a chance at getting just the spoiler, but the odds are pretty low.

damn. to paint, or not to paint ? IMO, the car looks more elegant with matching color, but it looks sportier with the "original" tail.

Funny, I don't have that problem. Of course, mine is black so.... draw your own conclusions. We are truly blessed to be making such difficult decisions as these!

As you know Dan, that was a factory option. I personally think it will visually lift the rear end. On dark cars it is a push, but on a white car it can be a dramatic change. Look at John E.'s car.

Yes, on lighter colors, that would indeed be the case.

On midnight blue or slate grey, I would not bother.

Iris blue is in that middle segment - enough to make the tail stand out.

Aw heck, I'll probably do it, just because anything that causes me to think about

this long, must be a sign <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Besides, if I really hate it later, I can always buy a new black spoiler from the dealer - after all, I can't imagine Porsche would charge too much for a hunk o' fiberglass.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Eric,

Thanks for the heads up. Now I'll really have to do some strenuous thinking <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> in the next day or two and decide which way to go with this.

Body shops are all closed until Monday, I need to go to my favorite two on Tuesday morning and get an idea what they want to paint the spoiler... that's a factor which will come into play also..

ds968,

Funny you mention painting the spoiler, last night my son and I were comparing his M3 and my 968, he mentioned the spoiler might look better painted to match the silver body. Anybody have a silver spoiler photo? (not a thread hijack)

I too am lost and confused. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

One day I think it will look more elegant and "finished", the next day I think it might look cheap, or even... dare I say it... pimped. Then the following day I think how nicely a painted tail will provide more fluidity to the appearance of the car, and the day after that I imagine the car will look like it came out of a Earl Scheib, or Miracle Auto Paint where for $ 249.99 they'll cover your windows and then paint everything else in sight. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Furthermore, so many new Toyotas, Saturns, various GM cars and such, have painted spoilers, it's becoming too common of a look.

Sure, on a 968 the lines are so classic you can't go wrong with either / or, so no wonder we're lost and confused <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/huh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/unsure.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Both my wife and my son prefer the separate spoiler look ( black )... but they're not the ones driving the car, so they get no vote here <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
