Rear Muffler Bypass: Worth doing?
#1

Is a RMB on the 968 a good thing to do? Is the sound and performance improvement worth it? Any concerns about pipe size and altered performance? I'm considering a cat-back replacement.

I can't comment on the sound aspect of a muffler bypass, but a cat back system needs to be approached carefully. The stock system is designed very specifically to work with the tuned pulses of the header to enhance mid range torque, and for a street car, that is exactly what you don't want to loose. Recent independent dyno tests have shown this to be the case, so If you are buying or developing a cat back system, get a money back guarantee that the results can be dyno certified.

Harvey, I do not know about a rear muffler bypass but I have deleted the rear muffler entirely and extended the twin pipes out to the rear with "pencil tips" chrome extensions. the sound is a deep, authoritive growl with no resonance at any speed and sounds great to me. I have received many compliments on both the sound and the appearance and have lost about 25 pounds of weight in the process. A local muffler shop did it for me for $135 and told me they can reweld the muffler on any time I get tired of the sound. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
