Rear Hatch
#21

Thanks. Well aware of disclaimer..... Darn! If I would have known, I would have stopped by on my way up from FL when I bought the car...... I'll see if I can get creative to get it down there...

Thanks again,

Sorry to distract from Duckman's original question...

I’m not sure from your posts whether your hatch glass is actually separated from the frame. The hatch glass on my 944 is intact, yet the hatch was rattling and squeaking. About two years ago, I replaced both latch mechanisms with new parts (one of the “arms” in one of the latches was not closing), and adjusted and lubricated the latches as described below; the hatch has been quiet ever since.

Assuming the 968 and 944 share the same hatch/latch design, you might try the following:

Confirm that the arms in the latch mechanisms open and close properly, and confirm there is no damage to the cone shaped receptacles in the latch. Replace the latch mechanism if it is damaged or not working properly.

Adjust the hatch pins. They should be tight enough so that, if you apply downward pressure on the spoiler with the hatch closed, there is no vertical freeplay or movement of the hatch. Don’t tighten the pins any more than necessary to eliminate vertical freeplay; overtightening places undue stress on the latch mechanism and may cause it to fail prematurely.

Ensure that the latches are properly aligned with the pins. With the hatch closed, crawl inside the back of the car, loosen the nuts securing the latches (loosen both latches at the same time), then retighten the nuts. This allows the latches to align themselves with the “natural” position of the hatch pins.

Lubricate the latches and pins every six months or so; I use a light oil in the latches, and a thin film of white grease on the pins.

Good luck.

Thanks Joe. The Pins and latch mechanism adjustments where the first thing I did once it started. As you recommend, I inspected, adjusted, and took out all play once closed. In fact, it may indeed be a little to tight. I was a slacker and did not go get lubricants in place. I need to do that. Struts were also replaced.

Some of the black film around towards the back and sides is delaminating/coming off. No leaks that I have spotted yet. I think the sound may be coming from the area closer to the roofline. I need to have someone drive it while I crawl on the back and try to pin where the noise is mainly coming from. I'll also need to oil the hinges to take them out of the equation. Now that you mention it, is really not a rattle. It is truly a squeak.

I'll look into this once I get back from travel two weeks from now. I'll keep all posted.... Thanks again to all for the input and advice...

hello I read your post about your hatchback that you had repaired. I wanted to ask you how it is now? Did it work out good and still not rattling or separating? Thanks Ginger

that hatch glass is for sale by the gentleman that I almost purchased a 968 from, and then later was purchased by kodomokid. It was removed when he replaced his hatch with a new one.
