Sorry to distract from Duckman's original question...

I’m not sure from your posts whether your hatch glass is actually separated from the frame. The hatch glass on my 944 is intact, yet the hatch was rattling and squeaking. About two years ago, I replaced both latch mechanisms with new parts (one of the “arms” in one of the latches was not closing), and adjusted and lubricated the latches as described below; the hatch has been quiet ever since.
Assuming the 968 and 944 share the same hatch/latch design, you might try the following:
Confirm that the arms in the latch mechanisms open and close properly, and confirm there is no damage to the cone shaped receptacles in the latch. Replace the latch mechanism if it is damaged or not working properly.
Adjust the hatch pins. They should be tight enough so that, if you apply downward pressure on the spoiler with the hatch closed, there is no vertical freeplay or movement of the hatch. Don’t tighten the pins any more than necessary to eliminate vertical freeplay; overtightening places undue stress on the latch mechanism and may cause it to fail prematurely.
Ensure that the latches are properly aligned with the pins. With the hatch closed, crawl inside the back of the car, loosen the nuts securing the latches (loosen both latches at the same time), then retighten the nuts. This allows the latches to align themselves with the “natural” position of the hatch pins.
Lubricate the latches and pins every six months or so; I use a light oil in the latches, and a thin film of white grease on the pins.
Good luck.
