I'm looking for a rear hatch for my coupe. I've tried dC Automotive, German Auto Dismantlers and Oklahoma Foreign Auto. Other than buying new, does anyone have any other sources or great ideas.
Someone already offered the, "Buy a cab," great idea.

Why do you need a new hatch, Duckman? Just curious because I do too if I can find one cheap enough.

Thanks, Tom and Bob. I hadn't tried 20th Street but will.
Mirror, my glass and frame near the top have separated. I tried to have it repaired but an auto-glass specialist who has fixed or tried to fix many of these over the years says he cannot fix it properly and won't guarantee the outcome. With that unhappy news, I've started shopping.

Whereabouts? Mine has a slight separation on the top right corner, but does not leak. Can you send me a pic somehow? I can do the same. I'm looking for a hatch for a different reason though. My wiper motor mount was torn off by some genius of a prievious owner, and the defroster wires were cut.

Mirror, my glass has separated from the frame at the top of the hatch, sort of between center and top right corner. It has fallen victim to two problems, both apparently caused by relatively poor engineering on what is otherwise a pretty well-engineered car. The first and most notorious problem is the delamination. The second is an extraordinary amount of torque placed on the hatch frame by the opening and closing process. A knowledgeable auto-glass techie said the hatch was trying to pull itself apart with every opening and closing.
FYI: I struck out at 20th St Auto, too. So far, I'm 0 for 5.

Indeed. Sorry 'bout the bad luck. I promise not to scoop any available hatch out from under you, let me know once you found one. German auto dismantlers in Georgia said they will be bidding on a 968 coupe soon, and they'll let me know. Are you on their notification list too?
Is the separation inside or outside? Is it leaking?
Best,

Did you call DC Auto or just check the site? They may be able track one down if they know there is a customer.

Hey, Anchorman. I was planning to attend but I'm not sure now. I may be without my 968.
As for the places I've tried so far, they inlcude: 20th Street Auto in Phoenix; dC Automotive; European Auto Salvage in Emeryville, CA; German Auto Dismantlers; and Oklahoma Foreign.
Mirror, I think it would leak in a heavy enough stream of water. It's bad enough that I get wind noise. Joe at German Auto Dismantlers has my name and number.

Glass separates on many 968s....I'd try fixing it first. There are detailed notes on this if you do a search. It's not for the faint of heart. Buying a used hatch will not guarantee that it won't delaminate after you get it. When I bought my black on black '94 in Atlanta, it was starting to delaminate..by the time I hit Colorado it was delaminated all across the top and leaking. Duct tape got me home..I did a repair and I think it's as sturdy as ever.

Harvey, did you use the 9X Auto repair guide? Also, I'm working with an experienced auto glass duo who has worked on several of these over the years.

No I didn't but I'm interested in learning mor about the 9X guide. Working with an experienced person (on 968s or 951s/S2s) is a great step in the right direction if you have that option.

UPDATE: Having been unable to find a salvage hatch, I brought the specialists back to give it a try. In one hour they had the hatch off, dismantled, stripped, cleaned, reglued, reassembled and reinstalled. They said to wait 48 hours before exposing it to weather, etc., and not to reattach the struts for about a week. Apparently the struts place a lot of pressure on the hatch frame.
The good news is that it is repaired, at least for now, and it only cost $100. The bad news is that there is absolutely no guarantee that it stay fixed.
More good news is that, barring unforseen disaster, I'll be able to attend the Gathering in Hershey.

Duckman, where are you located? I'd like to have my hatch repaired, and would be willing to drive some distance to make it happen. Do you have contact info for your experts?
Thanks.

Duckman,
Indeed, if I may also respectfully ask for possible expert recommendation... where? Mine does not leake but rattles, squirks and everything in between. Drives me crazy.
Thanks..

Crespo, the guys name is Dick and his number is 704.568.2334. He's in Charlotte, NC.
I want to caution you that mine is fixed for now. I have no way of knowing if it'll stay fixed. I'm wishin' and hopin'.
